September 2017 Chemo Starters

Hi Vee

I collected my wig last week,I got £97.80 off NHS and I put £100 to myself xx

HI Everyone

I’m a bit behind with how everyone is doing. I came home to Scotland for a few days as thought it would reassure my parents who are quite elderly that I am doing okay.

Hope anyone who has had their chemo this week is doing okay. My second cycle is next week and I know there’s a few of us must be next week too.

I am joining the hair shedding club on day 16. I’m more fascinated than upset at the moment, but I’ll see how I feel when it starts going patchy. I brought a headscarf with me just in case. Once it’s noticeably patchy I’ll get it all taken off.

I am just enjoying some time catching up with family and friends before the second cycle. Need to start increasing the fluid intake again as definitely not having two litres at the moment.

I think it varies between health authorities I think mine is about £80 they also have a wig lady come into hospital who has some that are available over the counter so to speak for voucher price butvyiu can add to it x

Hi Rhonaboat. good to hear from you. hope you’re managing to relax up there. Such a beautiful part of the world.
my 2nd cycle of fec was yesterday and they have me super anti sickness (Emend) which have been brilliant. Other than the weird flushed feeling for 5 mins as it was going in, I’ve felt sooooo much better than the first cycle. Hope yours goes well too. I think now that we’ve been through it once, we have a baseline!
I wear Maria only Wentnor I’m out but can’t wait to throw her off as soon as I’m through the front door…asking with my bra…joggies on…and reeeelax!
take care,
Jacqui x

ooops some typos in there! !!

Thank you so much for the scalp info…I had no idea about the odour issue, just assumed my mild shower wash would do (actually use aveeno too) but like the way of seeing it as preparing for your hair to grow!! Have ordered some shampoo too now.

Chasanddave, I’ll look at moogoo thank you, I like alternatives to the oil.

Hair off tomorrow, hate seeing it everywhere (I also have to pay the hospital £70 towards a synthetic wig).

I’m off to get my eyeliner back out, I don’t want to be letting the groups standards slip after all ?!!! xx

I have loads of Coconut Oil sent complimentary to me from the company Coconoil (google) My friend knows the owner. It’s good for our bare heads. I will get some to you when next in Maggie’s or maybe we can meet up when on our good day? I put in on my body, Face and scalp and it’s wonderful!!!

I was told to still shampoo my head when bare.xx

Thank you for your kind words of support.xxx

Speaking of heads and hair ladies, my hair started to come out on day 16 of first chemo very slowly, (keep sticking to screen of my phone) but my scalp is sore when I touch it. I’m using a gentle shampoo and hair cut very short now but just wondered if anyone else’s is or was sore?xx

Michelle
We are all learning from one another. You ladies are fab!!!xxx

Hi ck…yes mine was sore/ tender when I started to shed so I went for the no guard zero shave (my lovely hairdresser did it) and all that tenderness has gone. The tiny whiskers that fall out now are barely noticable in my little sleep cap. It won’t be long now before I’m shiny and smooth!

I am Wednesday for round 2 as well we have quite a Wednesday club on here- I am a bit ashamed to say it but am feeling more upset about going back again for the second round than the first - am going to have to put on the big girl pants that day and be brave!. Am shedding Hair now more each day - I am amusing myself by shedding all over the countryside on a short break with my husband - I imagine CSI finding my DNA all over the place - good job am not planning on committing any crimes haha. I am lucky that my head is not too sore just feels like someone is pulling a ponytail on my head.
My Wig is a good one if a little ‘full’ the hairdresser said she will put product on it to calm it down - I was very lucky that the NHS agreed to pay for it in full (in Scotland they do this) even though there were none on their approved list curly enough for me so they approved an extra one for me saving me 120 pounds - hope everyone has a good weekend x

Hi CK & Sept 2017 ladies,

I was in the Sept 2013 group.

CK your scalp hurting is im afraid the sign that your hair is on its way out :frowning:, I described it as that feeling you get when you’ve taken a pony tail out.

When I only had to touch my hair for it to fall out I took the cutters to it & cut it to a grade 3.  Some of the girls in my group shaved it but found that during chemo sometimes it grew a bit and the tiny short hairs act like Velcro on your pillow not a nice feeling, one that more by luck than judgement I managed to avoid.

hee hee! yes my son calls mine a velcro potato! I wear the little sleep hats stops me sticking to my pillow at night!

At least I know that it’s normal to be sore then. Im prepared for it to fall out but didn’t know my scalp would be sore! Looks like I need to wear my black satin night cap and look like a nun now.x

I hated my drain didn’t have one after wle but did after axillary lymph clearance it wasn’t that it was painful it was bloody inconvenient though x

Unfortunately I had to just grin and bare it. I had it for 8 days my 20 year old son refused to sit on that side of me said he was scared of knocking it And hurting me.
First thing I did when it was removed was come home and have a 15 minute untethered shower x

Fairy I went to asda and bought cheap vest tops the ones with thin straps 2 for £4 then cut the strap bit so I could just tie the strap when I had it on so I didn’t have to try and manoeuvre it over/around the drain point it really helped x

Hi everyone,
Nice to see some posts from others further down the road than us - thanks for you words of wisdom and encouragement!
I will be having surgery after chemo so useful to know what lies ahead. It doesn’t scare me nearly as much as the thought of chemo!
Good tip with the glue Tattyed.

Chasanddave - glad you got away for a mini holiday. It must have been good to get away from it all for a few days, even with the endless shedding !

CK- my scalp was sore especially before I shaved it(grade 1)it’s a bit sore again today and I seem to be having a massive second wave of hair shedding. I will definitely give the coconut oil a go. I will txt once I recover from round 2(had yesterday) and we can meet up!
I got a nice cotton sleep cap trimmed in lace from anna bandanna - cheap too. Stops me Velcroing to pillow.
My kids have different opinions on my lack of hair. My 6yr old calls me potato head and want me to wear hair and a hat at all times. My cuddly 4 yr old calls me cutie plum head and strokes my spikes scalp gently(so sweet and makes me feel so much better about my patchy noggin!).

Well, 1 day post chemo2 and no side effects yet. Feeling like the calm before the storm, but enjoying it while it lasts,
Love to all, Cath x

It’s funny how 2 children can be so different but it’s good you are including them in it. My daughter whom you met is going to Uni tomorrrmow and even tbough ahe hides it well I know she is worried about me. Thats why Im trying to stay strong and not let her see my little downs now and then. Coconoil ready for you when we next meet.xxx

CK hope your daughter gets off ok tomorrow. It will be hard for you both but you are only ever a phonecall away! Cathysib and chasndave - well done you are doing great x
