s'es of zometa

I have changed this month from tablet ibondronic acid to iv form-zometa.I was prepared for flu like syptoms, as warned by bc nurse ,but did not get any, have however had constant nausea this month and a really sore stomach.Has anyone had any se’s like this on zometa.
I have also had a different brand of leterozole this month which I have not had previously so wondering if maybe that could be the cause.
Since changing to generic leterozole I seem to have had several different brands.I don’t really mind having the generic form but wish they would stick to one brand at a time and then maybe could find if different brands have different se’s.

Hi there. I have been on zometa for ages. Had flu like symptoms night of first dose but nothing since. I don’t think it’s the zometa causing your nausea.

From several comments I have heard Lucinda it is far more likely to be the letrozole that is causing the problems. It seems to happen an awful lot with tamoxifen as well. I have been on zometa for some time now and haven’t had any se’s at all.

I’ve been on zometa for over 3 yrs now and it tires me out for a couple of days and I did have a small touch of flu-like symptoms after the first couple but none since. My onc told me originally that the bone drugs, be it IV or tablet form, can cause reflux/indigestion and I do get this more than before. Occasionally, depending on what I eat, it can cause me to cough so much I am sick but I don’t feel nauseous.

I agree with the others and think it may be the different brand of AI. See how you are next month (assume you will be having IV monthly) and then mention to your onc.

Good luck, Liz

hi Lucinda

I have been on Zometa for over a year - had no side effects at all (even after the first!) My only dislike is the ‘hunt the vein’ and all the bruises I invariably get from the failed Attempts.

It is more likely to be the AIs!

Hi Lucinda

Agree with the others. Don’t think Zometa is the culprit…

Hello, I’ve been on zometa for 11 months and have nothing like what you describe. I used to feel as though I was in a “strait jacket” for a few days after the treatment but thats stopped now. However!! I, at the moment, am feeling nauseous, like churned up, it’s putting me off my food for heavens sakes. I think it’s because my weekly doses of chemo (taxol) have stopped and I’m about to go onto another hormonal drug and I’m scared it won’t work. Maybe it’s an anxiety thing???
Nicky - they play hunt the vein with me too!
Good luck xxx

thanks everyone for your comments.
I think it is probably this particular brand of letrozole as I now have an upset stomach, unusual for me as I suffer from constipation because of the painkillers.
I spoke to my pharacist and he says to remind him when i get my next script and he will order a different make.
hey ho these things are sent to try us.
I also have hunt the vein. Went for bone scan last week and took 4 attempts before they could do the injection-had a black hand for days.

Hello. I was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in my lung in August this year.
I’ve experienced problems with both letrozole & zometa. On letrozole I had severe nausea every day. Anti-sickness tablets had no effect & I found it difficult to eat and drink. After my first dose of zometa, I had flu-like aches & pains in the night & was violently sick for 24hrs. My consultant took me off the letrozole & suspended the zometa. He put me on exemestane and a 2week course of steroids. This has pepped me up & eased the nausea. I’m now waiting for the ‘come down’. I’ve had my 5th Herceptin today & feel a bit yuk. But overall, I’m better than I was on my previous regime.
It’s so hard to know what’s causing what, & what’s making me feel better. My bones are osteopaenic & have been since I first had breast cancer 12yrs ago. But so far the cancer hasn’t got to my bones. I do worry that, without the bone medication, there’s more risk that the cancer might creep in. But I couldn’t bear to be so sick again!
