I’m a 45 year old peri-menopausal thing. I was referred by my GP for a mammogram and ultrasound of my right breast after finding an area of flattening at the bottom of my breast. No lump but breast feels fuller than the other. Ultrasound and mammogram were all clear - fatty lobules apparently. Gradually over the last 6 months the flattening has continued and now is more like a dimpled indentation. Still no lump but breast is sore in places and I have a very slightly enlarged lymph node at the bottom of my neck above the collar bone (less than 1cm). I see my GP regularly because I have been being treated for depression and I did ask him if the fatty lobules could be continuing to grow - he said they could and suggested that my low mood might be causing me to focus on this but also said that he would happily refer me again if I was worried but he says it is unlikely that anything would have developed since that last referral. Should I go back?
I think you have to do what feels right for you, people could all react differently to the situation…Some might not be bothered and put up with it, thinking they’ve had the ‘all clear’ from the clinic and a GP has looked again, some it might worry away at them and be in their thoughts all day and they need additional reassurance. I think maybe you are in the second category of people, especially as you already have depression and may be prone to focusing in on physical/ health issues. You are noticing changes and hearing that those are benign changes from the clinic specialists sounds like it would be a good idea. I think your GP is right that 6 months wouldn’t produce a dramatic change, even those of us who have had breast cancer and a chance of recurrence only have a mammogram every 12 months.
Another referral and check sounds like it may be needed for you personally though to finally lay it to rest for you, and if your GP is offering and it’s going to play on your mind then go for it!
