Should I have a hysterectomy

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April (grade 2 ductal carcinoma) and had a lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy.  I was given the all clear in August and continue to take Tamoxifen.

Recently I discovered a large lum in my lower tummy and after seeing a gynocologist he’s confirmed that I have fibroids of up to 10 cm.  Knowing my background he’s said it’s up to me whether I leave them or have a hysterectomy.  I’m so confused about what to do and have spoken to my oncologist.  He said it’s not unusual for this to happen to women after suffering from breast cancer and if I go down the hysterectomy route he’d need to take me off Tamoxifen and put me on something else.

I really don’t know what to do for the best.  Do I leave it or have the op.  Has anyone else been in this situation?  I’m 46 years old.

Hi Jenny

I haven’t been in your situation, but I thought I’d chime in as no one else has. I think the question first of all is what will happen if you don’t have the op? Will you get pain, bleeding, swelling? And if you do have it, what are the side effects, recovery time etc. And finally, how do you feel about changing to an aromatase inhibitor like Anastrazole, they have completely different side effects. If you’re happy on Tamoxifen you might want to stay with it, if you’re not then you might feel happier on an AI.

I recently had the discussion with my gynecologist about staying on Tamoxifen versus a switch to an AI. One of the side effects of Tamoxifen is to cause adverse effects on the lining of your womb, so that may be a factor to bear in mind.

But my oncologist said that generally he thinks Tamoxifen has fewer side effects and better quality of life than AIs, he always recommends Tamoxifen if possible.

Anyway, best of luck with this decision, hope all goes well for you.
