Simple single Mastectomy without drain

Hello
I had a simple single Mastectomy yesterday on my right side. I don’t have a drain.

I can feel ( and hear!) the fluid in my surgical site. I’ve been told it will swell, but at what point do I worry about the amount of swelling?

And I can use my right arm perfectly well. I’m a little confused about whether I should be using it, or should I try not to?
Nurses after surgery just told me to use common sense, but I’ve since read that I should minimise using it, apart from doing my exercises, since it could contribute to producing more fluid?
For example, I can reach over and grab things from a bedside table - should I stop?

Pain is 1 out of 10 which doesn’t help, since I’d be using it less if it did hurt!

Thanks for posting.

It’s understandable that you have questions about the amount of fluid (seroma) you are noticing after your simple mastectomy.

It’s good to hear that you are not experiencing too much pain and that you are able to move your arm well.

Seroma formation is common after surgery and is usually absorbed by the body over time, part of our body’s natural healing process. As you can feel (and hear) the fluid moving, you may find it helpful to speak to your breast care nurses for advice about whether to continue your arm exercises at present. They can also give you further advice about using your arm, although movements such as reaching for things on your bedside table should not be a problem.
