so cold!

had my first herceptin on tuesday… they had to keep stopping as i was shivering so much… gave me pireton that didnt really help. came home and felt like i had flu so went to bed like an eskimo!
my question is … will it always be like that or is the first one the worse? did ask the nurses but they had different opinions! plus they havnt had the treatment themselves.
thanks

Hi Jo,
I had my first herceptin two weeks ago and was fine while they were giving it to me but had the same reaction as you when I got home.
I was so cold that I went to bed and it was so strange I started to rub my legs and they felt really warm, I was freezing from inside. I had hot water bottles and an extra duvet and then started to feel O.K. but it lasted about four hours and I have been absolutely fine ever since.
The hospital did a follow up call next day to see how I was and she told me the first one is a loading dose, it is about a third stronger than the rest of the ones that we will have, so hopefully will be better next time!!
Good luck with the next ones,
Take care,
Jan

thanks for that… always get better advice from this site than the drs!!
let me know how your next one is… good luck

I was exactly the same on my first herceptin and have had another three with no problem at all.
Hope that helps

Hi all,

I have had three Hercepton injections alongside chemotherpay (Taxotere and Carboplatin) and have had similar side effects each time. Nurses and Onc didn’t seem to be familar with what I described which made me feel like I was making a fuss. After one day shivers start together with runny nose and weeping eyes. mini nose bleeds, and then about one week later achy joints kick in and I feel about 90 (not 52). I have tried all day antihistamine with no effect so have now turned to Ibuprofen x 3 each day for 3 days which sees me through achy joints. For shivers I just sleep in {J’s socks hat and have extra bedding which is cooking my hubby.

have now completed chemo and am due surgery soon, so will monitor reactions when I am just having Herceptin, I am thinking of trying Piriton each night following injection to see if it controls runny nose which gets so bad I get mini nose bleeds. Realy want to persevere with Herceptin as I feel it gves me a better chance as my BC is inflammatory with quite a large tumour.

I will update next week when next Herceptin is due to advise if Piriton works> I will inform nurses etc but am not hopeful that they will suggest anything, last time I phoned they said I probably had cold!!

Hope this is helpful to someone.
