Can anybody tell me whether they had eye infections during their chemo? For the last 2 - 3 days I have had itchy, watery eyes which are fused together every morning, it is really getting me down as I also have mouth ulcers to contend with. I really beginning to feel sorry for myself now and I know I shouldn’t!
Hi Tracy
I had exactly the same with my chemo. I am on the Tact 2 trial arm 4 so have been on epirubicin every two weeks. I mentioned it to the chemotherapy nurse and she gave me some eye drops which I have used at night. They have certainly helped a lot…at least I can open my eyes in the morning now!! So do mention your eyes when you next go along.
All the very best to you,
Margaret.

I had an eye infection after one dose of chemo and went to my GP who prescribed some antibiotic eye drops. At other times I had dry itchy eyes, but no infection, and on the advice of my chemo nurse bought hypromellose eye drops from the chemist. Best to speak to your doctor or nurse so that you can get the right treatment.
Hi Tracy,
I am also suffering with the eye problem. I have been bathing mine in the morning with some warm water and a cotton bud which does help. But think we should both take Margarets advice and ask for the drops when we next go, sounds like they really help.

Thats funny I thought it was just me! My eye has been driving me mad for last week. really sore in the night and sticky in the morning but I can’t see anything there. I will ask next time I go. Thanks everyone another helpful post.
I had a gritty feeling in one eye from FEC - they gave me eyedrops at the hospital. Then on Tax I got runny eyes - no soreness, but sometimes it was like I was peeling onions all the time
Thanks for all your replies, I went to the Doctors this morning and he has given me a prescription for eyedrops, of course, when I went to the chemist to get them they have to be ordered so I have to ring up at 5pm to see if they have got them in yet - honestly, you’d think I lived in the Outer Hebrides, not London.
I spoke to a friend last night whose mother was an eye nurse, she recommended bathing them in boiled water that has been allowed to cool with a dash or two of salt in it, I nearly recoiled in horror at the thought of salty water in my eyes, but actually it was very soothing and didn’t stink too much and it does feel better after just two goes, but I will still get the drops just to make sure.
The eyes are a lot better now, the drops from the Doctor worked wonders - combined with the salty eye bathing.
Had my 3rd dose of AC today, so am steeling myself for a weekend of feeling like rubbish. Only 5 more to go, 4 of which will be Taxotere (not looking foward to that much!).
I hope I don’t get the eye problem back in a couple of weeks time or the mouth ulcers - what a joy this chemo is!!
Such a relief to read this. Thought it was just me. I have been through the Optrex etc but it didn’t really help. It is a bit better now but if it comes back I am on the salty water or off to the GP for eyedrops. I also thought it might be the lack of eyelashes but it started well before then! Incidentallt tracy I had awful mouth ulcers with my first FEC but nothing since, not even on taxotere. Chemo has a great sense of humour.
