sore skin on neck after rads

I finished radiotherapy last week and so far breast area has not been too bad - but skin on neck - especially where it meets top of shoulder is very red and becoming cracked. It was so sore last night it kept me awake. Just wondered if anyone has else experienced this?

Thanks

Bright

Hi Bright finished rads 22nd july and i am the same breast and surrounding area fine. But i have four lines on my neck and throat quite dark purpley red and ver dry and sore. I look like someone has tried to strangle me.I was advised to continue with aqueous cream but today started using bio oil as i feel the skin may benefit from oil rather than a water based cream.Hope i dont make it worse but have used bio oil for various things in the past and always been happy with results. take care kitty x

hi bright try alovera gel its great my skin split and was raw, i even used the juice from the plant that was even beter if u have one just split the leaves and slap on. hope this helps pammi

Thanks Pammi and KittyW - I will try both suggestions. Skin feels so sore that i will try anything and good to know that my areas of rads burns are not unique.

Many thanks again

Hi Bright,
I had rads 10years ago so a bit of time has passed, but I used aloe vera plant I always have one in the kitchen. ou can buy them in garden centres I got mine in b&q here in Cornwall I have one growing out in the garden.

I’m 2 weeks since finishing rads, my neck did flare up. I used a combination of acqueous cream/aloe vera gelly to start, then flamazin (prescribed for flare up under breast) and just this week bio-oil. I am at the point now that it is clearing and I have a white area on my neck from new skin growth.

Once it started clearing it went pretty quick.

Bright - you probably need the flamazine cream - it really does work wonders… give your gp surgery a ring and explain…

Thanks Debs, My experience and Theresa,

I went to see the rads nurses this morning - they’ve given me dressings but told me not to use any creams as the skin is broken and weeping. I’ll give it another day or so and if no better with just the dressings I’ll ask about flamazine.

Bright xx

Hello, this time last week I was sore, weeping and broken,my G.P. gave me Fucidin H,3 days later there was a huge improvement. Good luck,

thanks Mags,
I will go back and ask for a cream - as don’t think merely covering the burn is enough.

One word … SUDOCREM! Last blast of 25 for me tomorrow - hoobloodyrah! - and three red lines emerged a couple of days ago, so skin has stood up really well, considering the sensitive soul that I am - skinwise at least!

Also had suddenly become VERY rosy and hot over whole of treated area. Smothered myself in Sudocrem last night, and the redness, sore lines and heat have all vanished overnight - I kid you not.

It was always an old favourite of mine on the kids’ bums when they were little, and it definitely proved its worth again last night.

Jacq, so you’re nearly done - great news. And what a long slog it’s been, too. How’s your back now? I’m glad the sudocrem is helping, anything that eases it is worth a go. I finished rads end of May and boob is still slightly tanned looking, warm and swollen - I have a sneaky suspicion it may be lymphoedema of the breast but am waiting for appt to see bcn. I’ve been given pressure gloves for my hand, can’t wait to see what I get for the boob!

Dare I ask what’s next for you Jacq! So glad your treatments almost done anyway as I know what a helluva nightmare it’s been.

Hope your family are ok, too.

PS Have you succumbed to swine flu yet - I had it a couple of weeks ago. And when the next ‘pandemic’ arrives in the UK, be it Rabbit flu!!, Lizard flu!!! or whatever, I’m sure I’ll get that too…

Hello Pat! How lovely to find you again. Was only thinking of you earlier - no, really! - as it seems we all appear to have moved on from our old thread.

My youngest is fine, thank you. Her lump has vanished at the mo., but they’re going to keep an eye on her. Hope all yours are good.

Yep, it has been a long slog for all of us. Must admit I’m feeling a bit ‘windy’ at being on my own after all we’ve been through the last year.

Trust you to get swine flu, hope your posh gloves don’t make it look like you’ve got trotters too! And let’s hope it’s not the dreaded ‘L’ word either!

Back’s all healed - can you believe it? - only took 8 months. Not a pretty sight though, mind you bionic/special are words that appeal to me rather than boring surgery scars.

I’m thinking of starting a new trend of ‘lined’ bodies - which may (or may not!) take over from the current trend of tattoos.

I’ll be glad when the 17th of this month has been and gone, as that’s the day I go for the follow-up appt., for mammogram results I had a week ago on the other side. Doc said it was ‘just in case’!

When I went for it, I joked to the technician carrying out the mamm., that she had better not find anything wrong with this boob, after the year I’ve had. So she said “Well, you’ll just have to deal with it won’t you, if that’s the case”. I tell you what …!

Anyway, we both still seem to be doing our best to stay upbeat. (I know we both have a few weepy days sometimes, but that’s allowed.) I intend to take one day at a time and do my best to make each one a cheery one, and I know you’re the same.

Good luck, and please stay in touch, we may have to start a new thread somewhere. Lots and lots of love and hugs. xJacqx

Where did the technician do her training - a bloomin’ prison?! I can honestly say that virtually all the health professionals I’ve come across since dx have been great - kind, understanding etc.

So glad your daughter’s lump has gone for now - my daughter gets very lumpy breasts at certain times of the month and she takes EPO, haven’t heard her complain of the usual tenderness so maybe it’s helping.

Now we’re finishing active treatment it’s a real downer, or it was for me anyway. It’s not that I feel abandoned or anything but it feels like it’s just me and the uncertainty now and it’s tricky getting my head round it. I still have regular checkups and will have yearly mammo in October. I’ll cross my fingers for your results on 17th - sure it’ll be fine.

Have you ever heard from Lou who started ‘our’ thread? I hope she’s not online coz she’s too busy enjoying herself. If any of the other ladies from ‘Friends Need’ read this, do get in touch and hope you’re all well.

I’d hate to lose contact, I’ll add you to my contacts, if thet’s ok, then can pm you.

Take care, love and hugs, Pat x

PS Hope all the other rads ladies are coping okay with rads - I didn’t have a problem til about 10 days after treatment ended and it was in the crease under boob. Dressings from dr and getting air to it helped and in about a week or so I had new skin. Best of luck x

Nope, Lou’s vanished. I think she’s ok though and probably enjoying her little family, away from us wrinklies.

Contact request very much accepted - pm away! And I LOVE jellied eels. Just off to get some now - my Sunday treat! xJacqx
