Soreness after treatment has finished

hi All

I had my last rads last Monday. Skin has generally held up ok but bit under boob has got v sore and cracked…so I was happily slathering on the Aqueous cream…only to ring my rads bods and be told it would make it worse so to stop! Had anyone else had this? Any tips on how long it may last. If I stretch to reach something it feels like it’s splitting and really really hurts.

Merci!

xx

Hello lizalou

My skin didn’t actually split but I was warned that if it did to put absolutely nothing on it until it was healed over.

I’ve read other postings on this site which say it usually recovers pretty quickly. I think some people have been given a different cream to put on split skin - I expect someone will post soon to tell you.

After my rads I carried on using the aqueous cream for about a month and the soreness went fairly quickly.

Hi Lizalou,
I finished my rads on Monday 3rd Dec. I too have a small split under the breast and a sore area where the booster rads were done. I was sent to the nurse a couple of days before the end of my rads as they’d noticed my skin was just beginning to split, the nurse gave me some gel and dressings. I used these for a few days after rads had finished, I then went to my GP who prescribed Flamazine burns cream. It’s quite good and I did notice some improvement but like you every time I move or stretch it would re split a little. I still cover the rest of the breast in aqueous cream as it can become quite itchy. I think the split is gradually reducing, it’s now 10 days since my last treatment and the nurses said the effects reach a peak after 10days. I place a dressing under the bra to stop it rubbing and when I’m at home I tend to go bra less now. I think it’s now it’s on the mend and hope by this time next week to feel a lot more comfortable. Like Anthi I will continue with the aqueous cream for some time after the soreness has gone.
Do you have any further treatments planned. I have an app with my onc on the 11th Jan to check on my skin, then nothing until a mammogram in Oct next year.
I hope this has been of some use to you and wish you all the best.

I agree with most of what Caz says. The only thing is I was told( I was very sore and blackened nipple), was if my skin started to split then I should STOP using the aqueous cream and they would provide me with special dressings. As it happened mine didn’t split, however I do think that it’s not until the rads stop that you see any improvement. Mine is 5 weeks since last treatment and is almost back to normal.

Thanks for your help! It is feeling better already now I’ve stopped using the cream for a bit on the areas which are split. Am glad to hear it seems to get better fairly quickly!

Caz - I am having Herceptin every 3 weeks until September and have an appt with my onc in Jan I think…it’s so weird finishing the main bulk of treatment and feeling like the stabilisers have been taken off a bit!

Think you should enquire from your GP or BC nurse about these dressings if you skin is split, to safeguard any infection.

Hi ladies,
Well I’m happy to say the splitting under the breast has healed and I’m feeling more comfortable. The area treated in the last 3 booster sessions has now turned red and itchy but the cool aqueous cream makes that feel better.
Lizalou I hope your skin is improving too. I know what you mean about the stabilisers coming off, fortunately I’m busy preparing for Xmas so not having much time to think. When everyone goes back to work after Xmas and new year I think I’ll hit a rocky patch. I have to take Tamoxifen for the next 5yrs, so far I’ve had no side effects.
All the best
