Has anyone suffered from skin on tips of thumbs/fingers splitting when on taxotere? Have you found anything particular that’s relieved it, other than bog standard hand cream?
I’ve only got one more to go, but my thumbs are particularly bad and haven’t had time to recover before my next session this Friday so I’m guessing they’ll be even worse in a week or two.
The whole Tax effect can be awful can’t it. Anyway, am I right in saying you actually mean the skin on your finger tips not your nails? If so, then if it’s really bad, maybe some cream that’s meant for your feet, you know the type for cracked heels?? It was the only thing that fully sorted my dry hands out after I’d tried hand creams, I was desperate. It’s so intense for your feet that maybe that would help you, hope so anyway. xxx
I suffered from that and it is really painful. They are only small splits but they hurt ! I just put cream on and plasters over to soften the skin and that helped. I finished Tax about a year ago but am on herceptin and it still happens.
I now always use rubber gloves when doing washing up etc as find that some detergents cause it.
Hi,I was given diprobase cream when my hands and feet were very sore and started to peel, and vitamin B6 or 12 can never remember which one.Ask your oncologist, they gave them to me along with the steroids and anti sickness drugs so I didnt have to pay for them.
Hi Alison
I’ve got similar problem, really dry skin on my hands and the skin on one of my thumbs is split in a couple of places. I put E45 cream on and make sure I put a lot of it on just before going to bed, it’s helped but not cleared it completely.

I had really bad hand foot syndrome when I started on Xeloda - I know it’s not tax, but it also started to come when I had just finished last Epi, so assume it’s something chemo does
My Trial Nurse said try Udderly Cream. It’s really good and not greasy. I tried all sorts…E45, then Aveeno hand cream which was better than the E45, I also tried Lansinoh (cracked nipple cream) which is pure lanolin - very sticky but used it at night with cotton hand gloves and it worked really well. I didn’t have the udderly cream then but I have my dose of chemo dropped so the combination of the two worked well. My hands are back to normal now. I have some small sachet samples that the distributor sent to me for me to give to the Chemo nurses but if you need to try it send me a msg and I’ll post it to you. There is a whole range - check out the website as you can get it on the internet but from stockists which are very few. I got mine from Natterjacks in Liverpool, but only the uddeley Smooth hand or foot cream. They don’t have the other stuff like the extreme version with urea (which is really good).
I did put plasters on my finger tips too as the cuts areso sore aren’t they.
Good luck,
Fiona
I was on Taxotere and now on Xeloda and my hands and feet have been awful. The Onc gave me a two week break over Christmas because of it.I’ve been covering my feet with Eucerin lotion(which contains urea)then putting little cotton socks on to go to bed. It’s very oily but is soothing.
