starting chemo fri 1st

Hi Ladies,

First FEC completed on Sept 23rd, and it’s great to read all your messages as have exactly those SE and feelings!

The eating thing is crazy; I was on a super foods diet for a month before starting and determined to not to eat any junk… Day 2 couldn’t control the urge any longer, drove staright to McDonalds & scoffered a Big Mac & large fries!

Note to self: FEC 2 - need to stock up on comfort food!

I also have a PICC which has taken me a while to except, not because it’s uncomfortable but a real needle phobe and struggled to look at it but it’s becoming my friend.

Hi, haven’t been on for a while, but doing ok so far, day 10 today and I think I’ve been really lucky, had a few tearful days, few queezy days and quite achey at the moment, but all in all not too bad, fingers crossed it continues like this, my picc line is still quite sore but has been checked twice as it was abit oozy, hopefully will be fine now, they put a different dressing on this time as my skin was really soreand red, I am going to cut my long hair shorter today, very mixed emotions about loosing my hair, bit feel I need to be in control if possible, they said around day 14 it would start, so 4 days to go, have bought a couple of wigs and some nice hats so trying to be positive, put them in the drawer when they came but MUST look at them and face it, have booked to go to face forward which helps with make up etc on the 18th so hope that will be fun, don’t usually wear it so will probably come out looking like Aunt Sally !!! love to everyone else going through treatment and those who are through it,

Hi,

Chickened out of cutting hair yesterday, will do today without fail as I really don’t want to find lots on my pillow or in my brush, oh well, it’s a small thing in the big scheme of things,

Hi Belinda

Just reading through this thread and am really glad to find someone else also on 4x epi and 4 x cmf like me. I am also just at the start and had my second epi on the 29th Sept so I am on day 13 and in my “good week” now! Got lots planned to take advantage before feeling rubbish again next Wednesday (mainly retail therapy which I have decided is up there in importance with the other medication!). I also had a picc line fitted in time for the second one and have just had a week of penicilin because it was really sore but all OK now and I agree with everyone else that it will probably be helpful in the long run. Oh, and another thing, I had my hair shaved off the day after my second epi as it was really starting to come out and I decided it would be loads less stressful just to get rid of it. One week now with my wig and I am starting to feel a bit more relaxed wearing it out…!! Lucyx

Right, going to bite the bullet and shave the hair off, have a plume of hair following me - a strong wind and it’ll be gone! Starting to look like Mo Mowlam (thining badly at the front!)

Collecting wig tomorrow xx

Hi Juno

Good luck with the hair. I honestly found it a relief when it was shaved off as it was kind of like the worst it could get so I couldn’t be any more stressed about it! It actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and I am now loving my new cropped hairdo. You wouldn’t believe how many people have commented this week on my new haircut and then are completely amazed when I tell them its a wig!!
Lucyx
p.s. my husband keeps telling me he likes it shaved but the day I pick my girls up from school like that I really will be amazed!

Hi,

Have cut my hair really short and thinned it out, it actually doesn’t look to bad so hopefully it won’t be a mega shock when it comes out, I have bought a couple of wigs which I tried on tonight, had a bit of a laugh looked like a cross between David Bowie and Mick Jagger !!! so have ordered a short bob, hmmm watch this space !!!

Hair just starting to come out now, my scalp is so sore, wondering whether to shave off, anyone know if it will stop the soreness or will that just go when the hair has gone ?

Hi Belinda

Here’s the link to the BCC publication ‘Breast cancer and hair loss’ which you may find helpful to read:

Take care

I also had sore head but it did go once hair had fallen out or after about a week. I did find that while I still had loads of hair I wore one of the buffs hats as this kept my hair still. I never found the courage to shave it all off although I did have it cut short.
Ali.

HI,

Thanks for help, have shaved it off now and it feels so much better, feel quite liberated and free from decisions !! have even put abit of make up on, don’t normally wear any ! 3rd week now and more energy and feel really well, 2nd epi on fri, but hey that will be 2 down and only 25 weeks to go, yay

I was a little shocked when I first looked in the mirror, went for a No1 all over which looks a little weird as have bald patches and then areas of dark hair… different look! My lovely partner did it for me and he thinks it looks cool.

I suffering after my 2nd FEC last Thurs, lots of nausea so distracting me from the bald head!

Hi Juno
I found 2nd fec was the hardest for me so really feel for you. Take each day as a time and for positive thoughts I had just headachy feeling and tiredness with number 3. Much easier to cope with though the tiredness did last until Monday. Then went in today for number 4,as se’s been different each time I wonder what this one is going to send my way!
Big cyber hugs coming your way,
Ali

Hi Ali

Thank you for positive thought (much needed), feeling so lousy after Thursdays FEC was dreading No3 already! The first wasn’t great but far more manageable. Can still taste it… yuk!

Was todays 4th a fec or are you now on a different one? I know I start something else on 4 (can’t remember name but begins with d!)

Hoping it’s been kind to you today and sending back a big cyber hug

Lucy xx

Hi Lucy
This was my 4th FEC, so now 2/3rd’s of the way through. Not changing to a different chemo, just 6 sessions of FEC for me, then 15 rads and 5 years of tamoxifen to follow.
As for the mouth my dentist gave me a sample of corsodyl daily mouthwash as I was finding the taste of the others was making me urge. It is mildly mint flavoured and just seems to tone down the foul taste for me.
Halfway through the week and here’s hoping we’ll feel better by the weekend,
Ali.

Going for my second epi this afternoon, hair has now all gone, doesn’t look as bad as I thought it might, but boy does my head get cold !!! even in bed, I woke up the other night shaking, so dug out an old fleece hat I wear at the horses, slept like a baby then
;-)hope your all doing ok,

Hi, had second Fec on Monday. Did the cold cap again, even though hair has been falling out steadily since last Thursday. Feel like my goldgen retriever molting everywhere! It feels so thin and I’m sure I’ve got a bald patches now! Lovely! They changed my sickness drugs this time as a lot of vomiting after Fec 1. Haven’t been sick since Monday, but nausea kept me awake most of the night. No energy today! Sooo looking forward to the good week! Why is it that week goes so quickly??? Hope you’re all doing okay? Karen xx
