Starting chemo in May 2011

Sausage butty and a nice cuppa … and to hell with the weight gain ! Now where’s the remote…

Well done Angielav-enjoy the sausage!

Wandy-spa overnighter sounds great to me x

Rachel - so glad you’ve posted - got any news for us about your dad?

Thanks Rache … how are you and hows your dad …?
Smiles … you ok??? x

Sorry Smiles … just read your post … guess what? I also have swelling but had it checked out by bcn and she doesnt think its lymphoedema … just been overdoing it but to keep an eye on it … its on my back under my arm… hope its ok xxx

Hi All,
Well last chemo done and dusted, not looking forward to the next 12 days, but thank god I’m done with all the poisons.
Now fretting about the rads.
Congrats Smiles and Angielav on your last chemo, hope the se’s will be minimal. Sorry Smiles to hear you may have suspected lymphoedema, I do hope they are wrong. I’m having rads to my axilla and I to worry about lymphodema.
Rachel, Can’t believe after two weeks, you can’t taste the gin and tonic…very sad. Can’t wait to meet you all and a spa sounds lovely. I will try and check out a few central places.
Hope everyone is having a good day.

Noanie … well done you … I’m feeling pretty rank now so off to bed … but the sausage butty and cuppa was lovely … paying for it now! Hope we manage the next few days … what’s gonna keep me going is not having to have chemo again…!!! Bad news about the lack of taste Rache … I can usually manage a G&T about ten days after chemo and it tastes just fine… so really feeling your pain x

Well done angie, noanie and smiles. I wish mine was yesterday. I have to wait until next week. Don’t want to do it but want to get it over with, too.

Rach, How is your Dad doing?

Ninja, I thought you had yours delayed a couple of times because the neutrowotsits had buggered off. Guess I was wrong.

Wandy, I am up for a spa overnighter. Agree the Birmingham area would be best.

Hi Cherry, they b*ggered off when I was on EC and it was mid-cycle when I was admitted and they had recovered enough by the next poisonings.

They are continually low now I’m on weekly but I only need to be 1.5 to go ahead or 1.0 after a phone call to Oncy and possible Borrowed Blood.

When you say “Brum area” - I take it you mean the Midlands / Warks / Staffs? I used to live in t’Midlands and Brum - ermmm, NO, NO!

The Sutton Coldfield area would be nice - the New Hall hotel does spa breaks AND chocolate gourmet evenings!
Eeeek it’s £179 a night plus £69 for the spa - but you are given dinner, a boxed set of Downton Abbey and a bottle of champagne… crikey. Need to find a cheaper option.
Can I say now that I cannot afford a £250 night out?

Moor Hall hotel/spa does Feel Good Friday - £76 per person

An overnight stay in a standard double or twin room.

A spa treatment. Choose from a relaxing back massage, a mini facial, a mini manicure or a mini pedicure.

Three course dinner and full use of the facilities including gym, indoor pool, spa bath, sauna and steam room, plus access to fitness classes.

What sort of budget can we all manage?

Not £250 … by the time you’ve added travel, food, drink… did I mention drink … its a equivalent to a week away! Sorry, don’t mean to be tight … but if we want to have fun we don’t want to be divvying every five minutes!

Belfry also looks nice … £94 for 3 course buffet dinner, bed and breakfast and use of leisure facilities. Has spa and 90 mins spa journey is additional £30 per head.

Morning everyone,

The spa idea is lovely in principle but it does seem a bit pricey. I’ve just looked at the one I know at Hoar Cross and its far too expensive. Maybe we need to rethink back to a lunch in some central spot that is easily accessible by all, by train, (so we can drink!!)

I certainly do not have the readies for £170-£250 upwards and probably a nice long lunch would work just as well??..

In which case Brum might not be such a bad location for restaurants, taking your point re spas Ninja!!! I think we were meaning midlands if we had been going that route…

How’s everyone today? How are the se’s for those poisoned y’day?

Sunshine has now disappeared here and we have rain forecast for the next week…might mean I have to bake some more cupcakes!!

Wandyx

Hi all

Update on my dad-he still hasn’t had his op, and we are all v angry as broken hips should be sorted within 48 hours. The hospital keep changing their story-surgeon is on hols, we need to do tests etc etc. My brother complained yesterday and quoted NICE guidelines at them and suddenly he is having op this morning. Also appalled at general lack of nursing care, he has been left for up to an hour needing the loo as nobody answered the bell, and often when we get there he has had nothing to eat and can’t ring the bell as it is out of reach and he cannot move to get it. We hate complaining but they are just not looking after him as they should. He has developed pressure sores since going in, and they are now saying that that’s the reason why the op can’t go ahead. Just hoping things get sorted today.

As for me, I’m getting much better and actually enjoyed a cuppa today for the first time in ages so my taste must be coming back. I have my champagne on ice but it feels wrong somehow to celebrate with everything else going on.

Noanie and Angie, hope you are both okay. Sending you hugs xx

Ninja-I agree about BHam! Am happy to pay £100 or so for meet up, possibly more as I will be back at work by then. But I don’t want to spend too much as I really want to go back to Disneyland Paris next year as it is 20 years since it opened and I worked there for the opening season, so will need loadsa money for that. But def want to meet you all.

CO-enjoy this last week of relatively good days before next poison-will that be the last one?

Smiles and Wandy-hi and hope you’re both okay

Love to all
Rach x

I can see money is the issue and if we are considering going back to the lunch idea… if defo needs to be accessible by train … cant attempt to drive there and back in a day (oh and not drink!).
if we had more money and time, would suggest a lodge in centre parcs (sherwood forest), £110 each for a comfort lodge that sleeps 8 … from Friday pm to Monday am. But then there’s food! And cooking… yuk!

Rache … wonder if I met you in those opening days at Disney Paris … I did a classic car rally that ended there for Save the Children … in the opening days … it was brill!

Cotswold Water Park hotel looks nice too … but no idea wher Cotswold is on the map … its £101 per person for dinner b&b & one treatment in spa on Sat night … will investigate more hotels and lunch places later after hosp … maybe we should shortlist spas and lunch places … dates … and take a vote!?

Rach, I am so glad your Dad is finally having his op. I think you have a right to complain about his treatment so far. Make a detailed list of the issues so far and send it to PALS
pals.nhs.uk
Keep a copy for yourself and if they don’t smarten up on the wards, write to the Trust’s chief executive.
I will keep my fingers crossed that all goes well for your father today. Yes, it is my last FEC next Tuesday.

I am not exactly rolling in money at the moment, as I am self employed and haven’t been working since all this kicked off but something in the region of £100 - £150 I can manage.

I just spoke to my neighbour who had BC 8 years ago. She has just been diagnosed with bone mets in the spine. Didn’t show up on the X-ray but were there on the MRI. She is starting chemo next week, same day I have my last one, and than having RT to the spine. Bloody f**king disease.

Hope all those who got poisoned yesterday are not suffering too much.

COx

Dear all

Just catching up after having all family here over BH weekend - and then crashing out after FEC6! Am ok, but like some others waiting to feel elated - just so glad that was the last one. Don’t get my PICC line out for another fortnight, and now I have new reading glasses can see my beautifully ridged nails - I think a line for each chemo? (Nothing worse there though, so should count myself lucky).

Angie/Noanie/Smiles, hope you’re feeling not too bad after yesterday, and I think Wandy and CO you’re not long after. Ninja - hope the end of chemo doesn’t seem quite so far away …
Rachel - so sorry to hear of the ongoing problems for your dad, we had similar a couple of years ago with my mum so I am thinking of you (I know how hard it was then without bc to contend with, but hope the op goes well today (sorry if I have date confused))

Spring meet sounds great, and agree Midlands prob best for everyone. I’m up for either spa or lunch - sounded a good idea to think of a few alternatives and see what suits best? Went to B’ham with my daughter a couple of years ago shopping and stayed in hotel that had spa, plus ended up gatecrashing big firm’s Christmas party/Cher tribute night - a real laugh, but might not be everyone’s cup of tea!

Love to all - am off to combat queasiness with more food (Angie’s sausage butty sounding v tempting) - of course while I read my library book on ‘Cancer Fitness’ … Jude xx

Rache, if and when you send a letter, send it recorded or registered or whatever it is the Post Office does these days … its proof and they have to deal with it … can’t say they never received it!!

Angie - the Cotswolds are way over to the west, towards Wales, above Swindon - much harder to get to. It’s best of we stick to East or West Midlands if we are to ensure pubic(sic) transport for those who want it.

I’m glad that Rachel’s dad is having his op at last and hope that everyone else is OK
