Starting radiotherapy can I continue to work?

Hi I am new to this, diagnosed in Late July with grade 2 lobular cancer. About to start radiotherapy next month and I would like to carry on working. Is it possible? And any advice? Thanks

Hi

Yes, it is possible. I was also dx with grade 2 lobular and worked half days, in the morning and went to get zapped in the afternoon.

Depending on where work is in relation to where you are getting zapped you may want to think about doing it the other way round. Quite often I would get to the hospital only to find that there was up to an hour waiting time which is less likely to happen earlier in the morning.

You do get tired but I found I needed the normality of work to keep me sane.

Apart from that, moisturize, hydrate and exercise!

Hope it goes well for you.

Hi Torquay,

I too was diagnosed with grade 2 invasive lobular carcinoma in July and had surgery during the last week of the month. I started radiation one month after surgery. I finished the 30 sessions a week ago.

I did not know what radiation therapy would be like or how I would handle it. I actually I was really scared. But actually it wasn’t that bad. I used to get zapped early in the morning and drive straight to work afterwards. I have a very demanding job with endless meetings and conference calls. That continued for six weeks. Hard as it may seem but the sessions were actually a welcome break from the crazy life in the office. I used to go early and read a good book until it was my turn. Then I would spend the five minutes on the table imagining I was under the sun on a beach somewhere. Crazy right :)!

Believe me radiation is far easier than surgery. It is a mere inconvenience. You need to fit the appointments into your daily routine. You need to take very good care of your skin and drink plenty and plenty of water.

Good luck.

xx

I’ve worked through chemo and was planning to work through radio.
Thinking, I’ll work in the morning and radio last thing, or the other way around, I can’t stand long waits, so I’ll likely start with a 9.00 appointment
