Staying Flat

I had a left side mastectomy, and second surgery for lymph node clearance. Both my scars are very neat. I opted to stay flat as I didn’t want further/longer operations or the risk of anything going wrong. I have seen heard of many problematic reconstructions. I was 34B, so quite small, very active, running and walking. I don’t regret my decision. My husband thinks both my boobs are beautiful but different. I don’t wear the hospital prosthetic, but do use the washable ones from M and S. I often go to my fitness classes or run without it. I wear tight fitting clothes and not sure everyone would know which is the original and which is new. I was 54 now 57, I know you are much younger but the range of underwear is improving, so don’t think you won’t be able to have nice undies. I personally use many cropped tops with pads in and the falsie at times.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope they’re able to resolve some of the issues for you, feels like the last thing we need on top of cancer treatment is having other things reduce our mobility and limit the things we can enjoy

Thanks for your honesty. I think I will be ok, but obviously until it happens don’t really know. But knowing that if I really didn’t like it that I could change my mind is quite reassuring.

Hi @agata1, I got your email but can’t seem to make the link to reply work so I’m hoping you see this. My recovery from the mastectomy was all ok. Bit sore for the first 2 weeks but not bad. Was quite sleepy for the first week - think that’s just giving the body a chance to repair. Was driving after 2 weeks and back mucking out the horses after 4. The improvement in pain and mobility was huge in weeks 3 and 4. No lymphoedema, no infections. Wound healed really quickly. Do the exercises they give you as they definitely help with recovery. It really wasn’t too bad. I hope it all goes well for you. This time tomorrow it will be done and as my BCN said the cancer will be in the bin!! Xx

Hi, thank you so much for your email.
Nice to hear a positive experience. I think that is what I needed, that reassurance from you.
I am really nervous and anxious for tomorrow, specially worrying about lymphoedema and seroma, but will have a relaxing bath and hopefully that will help to relax.
Thank you once again🤗

I had a masectomy back in 2014 snd looked at all the options. At the time i wanted symmetry so went for full reconstrucive surgery which is major. The tissue in my reconstructed breast is obviously different from normal breast tissue and behaves differently so I have 1 sagging breast. My cancer returned in 2023 so i regret having the unnecessary surgery now but really appreciated how they looked at the time.

I had a mastectomy in January and opted to stay flat. That said, I am 67 so a lot older than you. I’ve been married for 48 years so figured that my husband has put up with far worse from me than a lopsided chest!! I didn’t want a reconstruction of any sort as I want to be able to feel what I have left, in case of recurrence on the chest wall. I was fitted for a NHS prosthesis and can honestly say that when I’m wearing my bra it is impossible to tell. That gives me confidence. You are supplied with a new prosthesis every two years on the NHS so that should take account of any size changes in your existing breast. Good luck with whichever route you choose x
