Stopping Tamoxifen 2

My concerns about stopping Tamoxifen are slightly different to the posting below. I reach 5 years later this year. Before having BC and thus Tamoxifen I suffered the most severe PMS for several years. I cannot face going back to this again. For me, Tamoxifen has been a life saver in more ways than one. I got my life back and no longer felt suicidal for 8 days each month. Will they let me stay on this? Has anyone any experience and/or advice on this? What else might they let me do, if they won’t let me continue with Tamoxifen. Thanks.

Hi Ginny

Can’t really comment I’m afraid on what else might be available if you can’t continue with Tamoxifen. I just wanted to say do you know that you’d have severe PMS again after 5 years? I don’t know how things can affect the body like Tamoxifen. I was on it for 10 years but that’s because of my family history.

I can understand your concerns though - have you spoken to either your breast care nurse or GP about it?

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Hi Ginny

The Oncs don’t like to keep people on Tamoxifen really for more than the 5 years because of the risk of womb cancer amongst other things. I took it for 6 years and when I stopped (aged 51) my periods returned but not regular for a couple of years. As Pinkdove says the best people to to speak to are either your nurse or GP.

You don’t give your age and this could have a bearing on what if any alternative treatments may be available to you. I doubt that you would be allowed to continue on Tamoxifen to control the symptoms of PMS.

Good Luck
