I just wondered if anyone had experienced the same thing as me. I finished chemo in Dec 2009 and rads in Feb 2010 and am on Tamoxifen. Around July 2010 I started getting a permanent, strange feeling not exactly in my throat, but just beyond it, and it’s still here a year later. I find it hard to describe, but it’s not a pain, just feels slightly inflamed or something, and I’m aware of it when I inhale. Doc sent me to ENT specialist who put one of those little scope things down there but found nothing. I wondered if it was an after-effect of the rads? Would be interested to hear of any similar experiences.
Hi Squirrel
I have just finished Rads (Wed 6th July) and like you have a “lump in the throat” sort of feeling. I had “indigestion” during Chemo which was cured with Lansoprazole. When chemo finished so did the indigestion. After about a week of rads I got the lump in the throat so tried the Lansoprazole again but it did nothing to relieve it. I had read somewhere that difficulty with swallowing can be a side effect of rads, I could still swallow without a problem but felt a definite lump. Discussed it with the Rads team who confirmed it can be a side effect especially when having rads to the supra clavicular nodes. It is apparently caused by the RT causing oesophagitis. They told me it takes months to resolve.
I am surprised that you have developed your feeling so much later. Maybe you could go back to your treating hospital to discuss it with them.
Apart from that how are you doing?
All the best - Diana
hi I havent had a strange feeling in my throat, but my mouth and tongue have felt weird, not sore as such just a bit uncomfortable and dry, I dont know whether its just a coincidence or whether its a se of the rads.
best wishes Liz xxx
Many drugs cause a dry mouth I have lozenges I get ( via my dentist) but my GP offered other things too. If you want names of them get back to me and I will get the name for you. My GP offered me a spray which is good but I didn’t like the gel much. Hope this helps. Val
Im glad I found this I finish rads Monday & found my throat is feeling strange not sore just like you say weird but I put it down to the pollen etc never even give it a thought that it could be a rad SE

Hi, thanks for all your replies. I’ve heard that rads can cause side effects which only start months after you’ve finished treatment, and this thing started only about 4 or 5 months after mine ended, so it might make sense. I don’t have difficulty swallowing, or even a dry mouth, just this strange sensation. What gets me down a bit is that you get through all your treatment and just want to get back to “normal” but then you have all these strange side effects that start you worrying again. I think a lot of things are down to the Tamoxifen too, but it’s only through these forums that you find out other people are experiencing the same symptoms you are. I did mention this to an oncologist, and she agreed the best thing was to see the ENT specialist, and it did set my mind at rest when he couldn’t see anything, so I don’t worry about it as much as I used to, but it has been annoying me a bit the last couple of days!
Otherwise, I’m doing fine, thanks, Diana, I’m learning slowly but surely to look after myself a bit better and take it easy. Just wish I could get some weight off! Treatment and Tamoxifen have thrown me into early menopause (not too early as I was 48 when diagnosed) but finding it REALLY HARD to keep weight stable and even harder to lose any! I’ve decided exercise is the key, but I’m a natural born couch potato, so I’m really going to have to make an effort!
Hope you’re all doing well and all these annoying side effects bog off soon! Squirrel xxx
Here’s a strange thing - I had RT near the throat (sub-clavicular?) and though I don’t have the ‘funny feeling’ mentioned here, I have found that my singing voice has changed (can’t hit the high notes)
…or could it be that Arimidex is slowly turning me into a man?
I also have the described ‘strange feeling in throat’ but only apparent when I lie down. Have been putting it down to the Letrozole and also as an aftermath of chemo and rads. I too had really bad indigestion during chemo which Omepraxole helped with. Sounds like it quite common for many. J.
Was just googling the strange feeling I have in my throat and found this thread. So does it seem it can be a SE of the rads, months later? I have a very dry mouth at night too, seems my salivary glands are not working! Finished rads beginning of March. The feeling of the lump is driving me mad, can’t forget it now and I know the more tense i am, the worse any kind of tightening in my throat is. Convinced it’s cancer come back.
hi jane really think this is a common feeling for us i too feel it more when snxious but recent scans on neck done routinely showed nothing so try not to worry too much xxx
