Sun Tan Lotion

Sun Tan Lotion

Sun Tan Lotion Hi All,

I completed my radiotherapy treatment 4 weeks ago (treatment to breast & neck area) and now that summer “appears” to be making an appearance I was wondering what approach should I be taking for being in the sun.

Im not talking about sun bathing but just general every day out & abouts !!

I know that I have to keep the treated areas well & truly out of the sun and of course keep myself covered but its difficult with the neck area (dont really want to wear roll-necks !!)

… so can anyone suggest the best sun tan lotion to use ?

thanks xxx

For Crazychick Hello Crazychick

You are quite right to be cautious about exposing the skin that has been treated with radiotherapy to the sun. Wearing shirts with collars and sun hats with wide brims will help cut down on exposure to the sun. You may want to speak with the Radiotherapy department that treated you and ask whether they advise total sun block applied to the area treated.

We would always recommend using the appropriate factor for your skin kind. If you are unsure about this many pharmacists are able to advise you.

Kind regards

Hi

I finished my radiotherapy treatment on 26th February to neck and breast area. The nurses told me to use a very high factor sun cream and to keep it covered most of the time. I’ve just invested in a very high factor cream from Boots which I’m going to try next week on holiday. I’ve also bought some long sleeve cotton kaftans to keep my arms covered for walking around.

I’ll let you know how I get on with the sun cream in a couple of weeks.

Hi Crazychick

Have just come back from a week in sunny, hot Fuerteventura. Bought factor 40 from Boots and the sun has not touched me where it shouldn’t. Wore long sleeve cotton caftans and hat walking about and was able to go to the beach and lie on a sunbed for a few hours each day (under a sunshade and using factor 40). I’m told I’ve got a healthy glow and I feel tons better.

Hope this helps.

Hi crazychick Hi crazychick,

Be sensible. Cover up. Have lunch indoors or under shade. Replenish high factor sun cream during day and put plenty on. But don’t be paranoid; sunshine is meant to be enjoyed.

I recommend ‘Lemonoil’ Carrot Sun Milk which is a suncream manufactured in Spain. [EU suncream regulations are tighter than UK ones]. I first discovered it before BC when on holiday in Portugal.

It has stood me in very good stead. For example the ultimate test: a day’s snorkelling off the coast of Tobago which is in the tropics and only 7 degrees north of the equator.

Other advantages are that it is pleasant to apply [it doesn’t feel like frying pan oil] and it does absolute wonders for skin condition.

I’ve seen it sold in Cornwall [I believe surfers buy it] but we order it online from Colvin International Ltd on www.colvininternational.com.

Hope that this is helpful.
