Suppressing the ovaries

Just a question really. How many ladies were prescribed two years Zoladex and five years tamoxifen? And then, when the jabs stopped, did you start periods again ? My oncologist ( actually her title is breast clinician!?) thinks that because my estradiol (Oestrogen?) levels are high I should perhaps go back on the jabs. It makes me laugh in a way since at the beginning she blithely said, ‘the good thing with Zoladex is it’s reversible’ and then when it shows that it is she is not happy!!!

I’ve posted recently about ovarian cyst and endometrial thickening. Zoladex does apparently make the womb lining thin but I was hoping not to return to the ‘sweaty nights’ . Lol: suggests passion- far from it!!!

Hi, I have just had my second zoladex injection, and am taking letrazole, but side effects so far make me feel about 100! Aching jioints in fingers, and stiffness when i stand up etc. Anyone know if this is going to weear off or if thre are any supplements that i can take to help eg. glucosamine? Only finished chemo about 6 weeks ago so could it be from that?

When i asked the oncologist why this treatment instead of tamoxifen the answer was that there is evidence you live longer on this regime, well, i hadnt planned on popping my clogs very soon anyway! It does seem from internet info that this treatment is preferable in terms of long term effects to the tamoxifen, what does anyone else think?

Hi

My onc said tha the results of trials between tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors show very little difference in survival rates. He said over 10 years AI’s may have a 3% advantage but that has to be balanced against the fact that they do not protect your heart like tamoxifen does so more people can have heart problems and consequently the difference is negligible. Choices choices - and they are all vile!!!

Hi Kitty

I was on zoladex for 2 years & still on tamoxifen. I finished zoladex end of October 07 and my period returned on the 22 January this year also had a period end of February but nothing since. I am due to see the onc next month to discuss things. She had mentioned at my last appointment ovary removal although I am not keen. I dont know if i would be able to go back on the injections again although I loathed them !!! its so nice to have my body back to normal again, anyway I will see what she suggests.

Hi

Just come across this thread - and for J - I have been on Femara now since Oct. and have the same aching in the joints as you, but would say that it does improve as time goes on. My onc said I should take Glucosamine together with Chondroitin plus Cod Liver Oil.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

Hi Kitty

I took Tamoxifen and had Zoladex injections too. I stopped my injections in January after several months cos the side-effects were too awful. My periods came back a couple of months later.

hth,

thanks to all for sharing your experiences, glad to know that this rapid ageing process is par for the course, as for the glucosamine etc. my oncs were loathe to say whether or not they would work but that i should try, i think i am thier guinea pig! I kinda get the impression that if they did work they would already be recommending them, so I think maybe I will try St. John’s wort to try to counteract any depressive side effects to the process.

Wow, i hadn’t thought about what happens after the five years is up!

Anybody aware of what oestrogen deficiency does to the body, mood, personality etc? I can feel that my personality has changed in some subtle way, the kids say I have a shorter fuse, but that could be the constant pain! AAAAAAAgh, get me out of this body please someone.
