Surgeon refusing double mx

I was dx 6 years ago age 34 and now at age 40 have recurrance same breast. Have to have mx due to previous wle and rads. I requested bilateral mx but surgeon is refusing as all scans show other breast as healthy. Not having recon due to recovery and young children. Didnt want to be lopsided and especially dont want to keep going through stress of mammos, biopsies etc on other side. Is this normal to only do a single in my situation?

Hi lolly73

Whilst you are waiting for the other users to reply with their experience and knowledge you might find it helpful to talk things through with a member of staff on the BCC helpline.  Here you can share your thoughts and concerns with someone who will offer you a listening ear as well as emotional support and practical information.  The number to call is 0808 800 6000 and lines are open weekdays 9 to 5pm and Saturday 10 to 2pm.

Best wishes Sam, BCC Facilitator

Hi Lolly - I’m sorry to hear of your recurrence. I understand how you must be feeling as I’m having treatment for a recurrence. Anyway, all I can say is that I know a lady who has had a mx and other treatments but is about to have mx on the other side to avoid the possibility of it happening again. She had to see a psychologist first to make sure it was really what she wanted. Do you know the reason why your surgeon is refusing? Maybe you could see someone to talk it through so that the surgeon understands your feelings, after all, if they haven’t experienced living with the fear and having to go through all the check-ups, tests, treatments, living lopsided and so on then I don’t think it’s fair of them to make you live like that.

I hope you can get a satisfactory outcome soon.

Best wishes.
