Hi went back to see my surgeon today and good news drain now out plus staples etc… Bad news is he is meating with the oncologist as they now have my results fully, although i´m still to be told these,
the partial masectomy hasn´t work and cancer is still in my breast plus the lymph cancer this they told me today, now heres the quandry my surgeon now wants to go straight for chemo but my oncologist wants me to have full masectomy first!
Is this norm! for them to be undecided on my treatment, the thing is because the tumour was so large I asked the surgeon to do a full mas in the first place I had my op on the 17th Dec only got everything removed today and now talking of a full masectomy!
Sorry, I can’t help you with this. Have you got another appointment to discuss this in more detail? They must each have reasons for their differing opinions, but I would have thought that they would need to get back to you with one preferred option that they are agreed on.
I do hope you get this sorted as soon as possible, and that there may be others here that can be of more help to you.
My medical team never agreed on anything - it was like being in the middle of a family argument. The question is which has the better outcome: would having the chemo first be a good idea in case the surgery displaced cells, it would also probably reduce the size of the tumour or would you feel happier if all the known cancer was removed bar stray cells.
Tell them that yyou need to know the best outcome as provd by evidence and don’t let them play you off against each other.
Hi, My surgeon is supposed to be phoning me on Thursday with the outcome, but I just feel I should have been there at this meeting tomorrow, maybe i´m being a little sensitive as we all get but it is my body!
I just feel so angry that why didn´t they do the masectomy in the first place? Or probably it´s me just having moan…
my medical team discuss all new diagnosis at a multidisciplinary meeting so they battle it out behind closed doors before they tell you what they have planned… obviously you have some input as well…
do you have a preference as to what you have first? as some people do have a preference or are given the choice.
there may not be any specific evidence showing one approach is better than the other but the squabbling does make you lose confidence in them a bit.
hope you get it resolved and good luck with the rest of your treatment
This is very a difficult situation for you, I’m so sorry. The multi-disciplinary meeting seems to be the norm and I don’t think patients ever get to attend. Also, I don’t think there is always a right answer. We agreed a course of action with my onc, then started asking lots of detailed questions courtesy of my husband’s research, and then we changed course.
My only advice would be to ask as many questions as you can about the likely outcomes of the two courses. Do you have someone that can help you with this? You can also ask for a second opinion, although that might delay your treatment.
