Swimming prosthesis

I’m off on holiday soon, (yippee) and I hope to do a lot of swimming/snorkeling. My present swimming boob is foam, and will obviously continue to drip water while I relax at a beach side bar, and will still be damp later when I go in again. One of the companies makes a clear one for swimming, has anyone tried it, is it worth the £30?!

Thanks, Silversue.

Hi Silversue,

Yes I have used them, once a regular swimmer so they stand up well to frequent use! and YES it is worth the £30.

HI, Have u not got a prostethis provided from your hospital. I have a sillicone one that has a sticky back that u can go swimming with…
Kate

Thanks girls, I get the order in! Yes I have a copy of “proper” prostheses, but they are a bit heavy. Wanted a stick-on one like yours, Kate, but they only come in one shape and it bears no relation to the other boob! Perhaps they’ll do some more soon. Thanks,
Silversue.

The cheapest I can find a clear one is over £50 and that’s without VAT - are you allowed to give the make you’re looking at?
Lyn

This is really interesting. I use a weighted foam one for swimming, but yes it’s a real pain on holiday drying it out. I peg it to the tent ropes! What is this clear one you are talking about? £30 sounds OK as this weighted one cost £22 anyway, and it’s already started to look smaller even after a couple of months use.

Hi Sarah

I picked up a copy of the Nicola Jane mag at the Breat Clinic and they have 2 inthere one is a foam one at £9.50 and the other is a lightweight one at £22.50. You can check these out online at www.nicolajane.com. Hope this helps.

IHi
I bought the amoena one for £30. see amoena website Just come back from holiday used it every day and it was fine. I have pocketed swimsuits for it to fit into and it was well worth the money

I have had a couple of the amoena ones - they are fine but because i used mine quite a lot with regular swimming one of them did go a bit funny. You need to make sure you keep the box it comes in. They wont usually consider faulty/returns unless you have the box. (and the receipt of course). Because my hospital replace my normal prosthesis every two years for me I have built up a collection of ‘spares’ now which i used for swimming.

Thanks everyone, actually tried to get a pair on ebay yesterday, but was outbid! If anyone on here bought the pair and doesn’t need the right hand one…

Silversue

Hi silversue,

What size are you :). If you look on the nicola jane website click on the prostheses, then on the swimming prostheses, I have one like the one on the right. I guess it is for a size 34B/C if it is any good to you

Many thanks for the offer Dawn, but I think I’ll get the clear silicone one from Amoena, or woman-zone as the foam ones will be too soggy if I’m wearing them all day for a couple of weeks.

I found out the hard way that if you don’t put the - in woman-zone, you get to a rather different type of site!

Thanks again for the offer,
Silversue.

I ordered a £30 one from Amoena but when tried it on in Amoena swimsuit it was too heavy for the suit so that side was sinking down, so returned it. Still have not been in swimsuit - so katymar can you tell me what sticky one you have, is it an Amoena contact one or are there other stickyones ?

I would really lov to go swimming. Kelly (who got the Gok treatment) said she had a sticky one didn’t say which, but that is the next thing I want to try as I tried the foam and foam-wiehgted ones but they just were’nt the same shape as me, stuck out like way too far.

Just bought a foam one from Nicola Jane, £9.50. Ordered size 10 (42C) which hosp said I was and it was too big. Returned free of charge and replaced with a size 8 which looks fine. Not had a swim yet, it may give me extra bouancy!

Irene

Hi Irene,
Trick is to squeeze the foam one discretely as you get out the water, or it continues to drip long after the other one!
If you’ve got a slightly weighted one, don’t wear it going through metal detectors at the airport, apparently it can trigger them: try explaining that one! lol.
Silversue.

No just foam and my other is silicone. Just after my treatment in 2007 I had a holiday in Turkey. I was still baldy and wore a hat, hated the wigs. At airport was asked to remove hat at security. I asked was it essential as I had lost my hair. I just got a miserable b*****d looking at me saying YES. It was awful, everyone seemed to stare. I nearly wrote to complain but in the end couldn’t be bothered. I think it could have been done much more sensitively, perhaps in a side room.

I am very reluctant to use Manchester airport after that.
