Swimming Tips????

Hi
I know probably a lot of you enjoy swimming after your mastectomy so I am hoping someone can give me some tips on the sponge and costume.
I got a costume last year and took the ‘plunge’ literally, even though i felt self conscious being so fat.
The costume has a pocket for the spongey boob but I found the blasted thing moved and I looked ridiculous. Had to stop at the end of the pool and have a squeeze and re-arrange it. Fortunately it was a private pool.I haven’t swam since, but just joined a leisure centre and the gym work is affecting my knee. Swimming although I am not great at it has been suggested.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

I use a sylicone “swimming” prothesis. They are lighter than a normal prothesis and have a slightly curved back, expensive I’m afraid but I presume longer lasting than the sponge ones. I find it fits well into the swim suit and doesn’t move around. Is your swimsuit a good fit? I’ve got 2 and 1 of them fits better than the other and the prothesis “sits” better in the pocket. You might be able to get a Macmillan grant to pay for it as I was offered this after my masectomy. I think your BC nurse can help make the application.
Enjoy the water. I think we’re all dolphins at heart.

Hi Liverbird

I just use the usually silicone prothesis, and that is fine.

Keep going, it’s supposed to be a really good form of exercise.

I love swimming and wear a sports bra under the swimsuit( with a normal silicon prosthesis),I got one of those cover all swimsuits with sleeves, and legs down to the knee, mainly because the weather is too hot for me to expose much skin.

After having a mastectomy in June I bought a new costume with pockets and a silicone prosthesis. Both fit really well and are very comfortable. As they cost quite a bit I have decided to try and get fitter and I now swim twice a week. I find the prosthesis really good - it always stays in place. I have found the swimming has improved my arm movement since the op and feel it is good exercise. I bought the costume and prothesis on the internet.
