Tamoxifen and bleeding

Hi, I wondered if anyone has had expeience of a continuation of mensrual bleeding despite being on Tamoxifen for a year ?

Various tests have been conducted including a hysteroscopy and as yet nothing conclusive, the dilema is to stop Tamoxifen or continue for a further 4yrs ?

I am making this enquiry on behalf of my sister who was successfully treated for early breast cancer.

Hello SNASHS,

you don’t say whether or not your sister has been offered Zoladex injections/implants, as these are quite often given to younger women to, as it is often expressed ‘put their ovaries to sleep’.  Zoladex is not without its own potential side effects but many people have no problems with it.

I don’t know your sister’s circumstances but whether or not she might wish to have children (if she hasn’t already) may inform her decision making.  Sometimes people choose to have a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingoopherectomy (ovary and tube removal) but this is major surgery and not to be undertaken lightly.

I hope she finds a clear way ahead soon - as someone who is currently having investigations after a second occurrence of bleeding on Tamoxifen (chemotherapy saw off my normal cycle, so these are classed as ‘post menopausal bleeds’) I know that it is a frustrating place to be.  For me, though, not taking Tamoxifen (or an Aromatase Inhibitor) is not an option as the ebnfits far outweigh the risks.

Hope that helps a little bit.

Hi my sister has no desire to have further children, she had a wide local excision for invasive ductal carcinoma with no node involvement, she opted to have radiotherapy only as the chemotherapy was belts and braces and her recent mamogram was clear along with her blood test , she was tested for ovarian cancer her tumour marker ca125 was normal, however her mensruation is so heavy that the hospital have indicated that she may have fibroids in her womb.

It is reassuring to know that others do get bleeding on Tamoxifen as my sister was told this should not be happening at all and made to think it was arare occurrence.

Thanks for that .
