tamoxifen and smears
tamoxifen and smears Hello everyone. I had mastectomy in Sep. 2005 followed by chemo and radiotherapy and finished all that horrid stuff exactly one year ago. I am currently on tamoxifen. I have spent the last year getting myself back to some kind of normality, attending the gym three times a week and have finally shed the extra pounds gained during treatment. Had a bit of a set back when my husband of 39 years died suddenly but I have battled on. I was just beginning to think optimistically about life in general when in March I went for a cervical smear. It took 11 weeks for the report to come back and I was horrified to discover that it was abnormal. I have been to see the gynaecologist, have had a colposcopy and a pipelle sample taken which thankfully has not revealed any pre-cancerous cells in the lining of the womb. I returned on 4th June and underwent a cone biopsy and I am now anxiously awaiting word from the hospital. The gynaecologist thinks that the abnormal result is possibly the result of tamoxifen causing changes. I hope that is all it is. I wondered if anyone else has gone through this? I feel really as if I have been smacked in the face having got through these last couple of years and I just thought I was through with hospital treatment etc. I suppose I am foolish also as I have not told my family of this latest episode as I cant cope with them fussing and worrying in case it is something serious. I wish I had the result of monday’s histology; it is the waiting that gets me down, especially now that I am on my own. Sorry for sounding so pathetic.
me too - all turned out ok Hello Chrissy
Just wanted to say the same thing happened to me and all turned out to be OK.
I got a call from my GP to let me know of the abnormal cells as I was just leaving the house to go for my first radiotherapy session - timing eh?! I was in bits!
But nothing more sinister was found once they had done the colposcopy. Have since had a 6 and a 12 month check up and all is still well.
Wishing you all the best

Menopause After a tram flap reconstruction in jan and radiotherapy i am now on tamoxifen…I would like to understand more about the side effects and is it normal for me to carry on having regular periods. At one point my doc said expect no more…i do experience night sweats and sometimes get so cold i cant warm up. My mood swings are a problem but am not sure if that is the tablets or an accumulation of incidents. Anyone out there can offer advice i would be grateful. Also I have heard there are different brands of tamoxifen the cheaper ones give more side effects is this true or just rumours?
abnormal smear thanks for your reply - it is reassuring to know that this has happened to someone else too. it is so hard to get through the waiting time, wondering what the outcome is going to be; one hears and reads such horror stories and sometimes it is hard to remain positive. I will update you when I get my results. Thanks again.
