Tamoxifen and Zoladex?

Hi All,

I have just finished my chemo and going back to see ONC 10th Jan will need to take Tamoxifen and she also mentioned Zoladex to ‘protect ovaries’ but not sure if it works as i’m 29 and would love a familiy and didn’t harvest eggs due to delaying chemo.
Can you give me some advice please?

Thanks Emma x

Hi emma,

I’m 36. I finished my Chemo in august. My oncologist said I need to tell him when/if my periods restart as we then need to have a chat about having the zoladex injections to shut down my ovaries. My cancer was weakly oestrogen positive so it’s to take oestrogen out of my system
I think. I too am on tamoxifen. The injections usually cause only a temporary shut down of the ovaries and function returns when you stop the jabs. The alternatives are doing nothing or having your ovaries out. I have heard of having the injections to protect your ovaries through Chemo but not afterwards. Hope this helps, good luck

Hi Emma,

I was given the option of having Zoladex before chemo as some research suggests that by sending your ovaries to sleep it can protect them. However some say this research is not much cop because those women who had Zoladex were young and their periods would have returned anyway. I am 32, was 30 when diagnosed. Had 7 cycles of chemo, periods stopped about 3 quarters of the way through, and stayed away for 10 months. Came back, had one very heavy period, Onc put me on Zoladex as they want me to stay without periods for 2 years. I am also on tamoxifen. Will probably come off Zoladex soon, just short of 2 years from diagnosis, as the hot flushes are much worse on both, and in the month in the lead of up my periods coming back, and only on tamoxifen flushes were more bearable. Hope this helps. Boo

Hi, i am also takin zoladex and tamoxifen. I was diagnosed in July 09, had chemo, radiotherapy and started zoladex and tamoxifen the same time as radio, last March, so nearly been on them 1 year now!! The only side effect i get from both of them is the hot flushes and night sweats, they are horrible!!! I also went down the IVF route before chemo, as i was only 23 when diagnosed, and just 3 weeks married, so next plan was to start a family…cancer stopped that!!! hope you get on ok with zoladex and tamoxifen!!
