Tamoxifen - effectiveness/side effects

My partners’ recent scan showed inoperable breast tumour + evidence met in 1 rib. Oncologist is preferring Tamoxifen [cells are Oestrogen receptor +ve]. First appointment with Specialist Nurse in a couple of days when hope to learn more detail. We are both at the beginning building up knowledge to be able to make best decision on whether/which treatment to start … balancing beneficial effects against maintaining quality of life. Please excuse the very open and general nature of my q? but I’m looking to learn of experiences of those in/have been in similar position. My partner is early forties/pre-menopause. She has not had previous surgery or any form of drug treatment/therapy.

Hi, I’m sorry to read of your partner’s diagnosis, I was diagnosed with bone mets from the beginning when I too was in my early 40’s and pre meno. My first treatment was Tamoxifen plus monthly injections to put me into a chemically induced menopause. The treatment worked well for 18 months after which I was treated with a different hormonal treatment. I was diagnosed in 2003 and after various hormonal treatments I started my first chemo in 2008. I have since, after years inbetween, revisited hormonal treatments which have worked again for a second time enabling me breaks from chemo. Edited to add I did have hot flushes, some joint aches but Tamoxifen was doable. Best wishes to you both.
