Tamoxifen - Heart palpitations

Hi Everyone

I am writing this on behalf of my Mum.  She was prescribed Tamoxfien in March this year, the main side effect has been the hot flushes (we have fans in every room now!), at the time her Oncologist prescribed Pregabalin to assist with the hot flushes, all had been ticking along ok, until about 6 weeks ago, Mum started to get heart palpitations at night when she laid down in bed.  Her GP did some blood tests (all came back normal), she is having a 24hour ECG tracker put on next week but we were wondering if anyone else had suffered similar symptoms (particulary as she had been taking both medications for at least 6 months before she started getting the heart palpitations)

Many thanks

Hayley (and her Mum Jill)

Hi Hayley,

sorry you have had no replies - and sorry that I can’t be much help either.

I am not aware of Tamoxifen causing palpitations, but that does make it impossible.  it might be the pregabalin (which I’ve never heard of), in which case there are other drugs that can be used to help alleviate hot flushes including clonidine (which I take) venlafaxine (to which I had a terrible adverse reaction) and citalopram.

Hopefully all will settle down for her, and a simple explanation will be found for her palpitations.

I am sure she values your support greatly, and I wish you both well.

I have had femara and tamoxifen and both gave me heart palpitations. I stopped my treatment and the palps stopped. I couldn’t stand it after 3 years and a pacemaker which I would not have needed if I had known that palps was a side effect of hormone therapy for my ovarian cancer.

Hi Hayley (and mum Jill),

I started Anastrozole last September and also began having what i call heart hiccups after a few weeks. they became more frequent and lasted longer - a heart trace at my GP showed nothing but as is Sod’s Law i didn’t get any palpitations while at the GP! He advised me to go to A&E if i had another longer episode which ironically i did the next day - stayed in overnight on a monitor and they said that i did have ectopic heartbeats and gave me Bisoprolol (a beta-blocker) which i have to stay on until told otherwise. Things levelled out but about a month or so ago back they came again and have been increasingly worse. I have had a letter to have the 24 hour monitor fitted in 2 weeks so i hope something shows on it. i had 2 funny turns today which i am sure have something to do with all of this - it makes me quite scared and i lose my confidence about going out alone. i am 54 next month and find that i can’t do half the things that i used to which frustrates me no end!!! michele x
