Tamoxifen/Nolvadex?

Tamoxifen/Nolvadex? Hi everyone, wondered if anyone could help me with this. Am suffering terribly with hot flushes since starting Tamoxifen Nov 06. But just been reading a couple of back issues of Amoena and come across a mention of Nolvadex - apparently being a better brand of Tamoxifen with regard to hot flushes.

Wondered if any of you have any experiences of this. Help and advice would be much appreciated.

Tamoxifen/ Nolvadex HI Jean,
I had been on Tamoxifen from Oct 05 until April this year. I had sufferd with terrible hot flushes and other symptoms which I could not put my finger on and describe I just knew I didn’t feel right. After reading on here about others ladies who had changed to Nolvadex I decided I would ask the Oncologist if I could change. She was quite happy to give me 30 tablets to see how it went and then I would have to go back to my own GP. I have to say that I feel so much better, I still get the odd hot flush but I feel so much like the old me , I hope this makes sense to you, it’s hard to describe.
I have just been to see my GP who has agreed to change my repeat prescriptions to Nolvadex. I would say it is certainly worth trying Nolvadex and I hope that they help you in the same way .

NOLVADEX-D Nolvadex is the brand that was first used. After a time, other firms were allowed to make generic copies of the drug. These are cheaper, so the doctors tend to give them to their patients instead of the original brand.
For some reason people often find that they have more side-effects with the generic brands, and not the original Nolvadex.
This might be due to the ingredients used in the tablets which are added to make up the pill.
You can try and get your GP to change the prescription to Nolvadex. Some are willing to change if asked.
I was on Tamoxifen for 5 years after having bc 8 years ago.

Nolvadex D I was given Novadex D by the hospital, things were quite good, after 3 months was put onto Tamoxifen, after only 1 week, I went back to the doctors because I felt terrible, sick ached all over hot flushes, basically if it was for a week or two fine, but for 5 years I dont think so. After a bit of harrasement on my part was given Nolvadex D, but every prescription renewal I had to request it especially or they gave me Tamoxifen again. Within days I felt better, so definately worth changing.
good luck
if you dont ask you wont get!!

Been on Tamoxifen for about 3 months now. I was given Nolvadex right from the start. I had hot flushes and night sweats for a few days (and nights!) but don’t have them much anymore. I do have joint pains though.

Good luck!!

Hi,

I was originally put on tamoxifen/nolvadex and things were great no hot flushes no problems what so ever. But the powers that be here in NZ decided that nolvadex were too greedy with the price they were asking for the drug so all patients on that brand had to change to a generic brand. Not sure but, I really do feel that the problems and disease progression I had after that is directly attributable to the generic brands.

I started on Nolvadex then changed to a generic brand after the local PCT stopped GPs from prescribing branded drugs. I have n’t had any problems with either.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your helpful replies - think I’ll see the GP and see what he says about prescribing Nolvadex - it sounds as if on balance it is slightly better.

Good luck everyone.
