Tamoxifen staring today

Hi all

I have just been to my GP’s to collect my prescripton for Tamoxifen, I have only been given 56 tables, that’s less than 2 months worth and at £7.20 per script it is going to be expensive over 5 years.

Is this normal to be only give such a small amount per prescription?

Many thanks in advance

Maria

I get 56 too (although Boots usually supply 60 as thats how they come)
From April next year(I think),drugs for cancer patients will be free in England. So if you are in England you will only have to pay till then.
I am in Scotland so pay £5 and that will reduce each year until prescriptions are free.

Hi Maria. I am a doctors receptionist so in charge (for want of a better phrase) of giving out/issuing prescrptions.

I would give 3 months…other doctors would give 2 months (56 tabs).

Go to your GP tell him you are in it for the long haul and appeal to his better nature (!) for a 3 month script.

It should work.

Good luck

Hi Maria

My GP gives me 3 months at a time, he said that he would do that quite happily as Tamoxifen is a ‘cheap drug’. It’s worth asking for more! they can only say no. I’m hoping that soon England will follow Scotland and Wales and give everybody free prescriptions!

I also collected my first Tamoxifen prescription from the GP yesterday - he said that he is allowed to supply only a 2 month prescription. I should have asked whose rule it was, though he did sound sorry so I guess it is a directive from outside the practice.

There is a report in today’s paper that over half BC patients stop taking Tamoxifen before the 5 years is up (study by Uni of Dundee) - maybe cost is one reason why

Yes I just saw article on BBC health website, oops I am guilty of forgetting

I was diagnosed Sept 07 I have just finished up the Heceptin, Finished rad in March and Chemo this past Jan. I will have my port removed on next tues. I started arimadex on Sunday. So far so good. It has been great to read others comments on finishing each stage. It is great to finish, but I have a strange feeling too. I don’t think I am scared, not sure how to describe it. I know it is scary to hear of the side effects of arimdex. But I was scared with the other treatments too. I never did get sick or nauseated with chemo. My hair did fall out, but is growing back now. I am glad I have this site now though to read what others have and are experiencing on arimadex.

Thanks for your messages, it seems most of us get the same amount, but I will try for 3 months next time.

Looking forward to April and the possiblilty of getting our tamoxifen for free.

Maria

Same for me too. I used to get 3 months supply from my old surgery, but since moving house and consequently doctors i can only have two months at a time.!!

So is that for real that next year we will get it free ???

we should get it free now …

Yeah the government passed a vote that cancer patients in England will get free prescriptions from next year.
However in N. Ireland they hadn’t agreed to this but 2 days later the government have said that all prescriptions will be free in the next couple of years.
I’s just happy that I’m not paying for all my medication I’ve had since dx.
