Tamoxifin and pregnancy

Hi there
I have a question i would like to ask.
I have been an irresponsible idiot, and had a ‘mishap’ in the bedroom dept. the other day (first time in absolute ages i would like to add, and all down to feeling rubbish about having one breast and the tamoxifin).
Anyway, no protection was used (we are both to blame for that), i am approaching forty, very irregular periods and chemo finished last April.
What are my chances of falling pregnant? A pregnancy is not something i want to entertain for many reasons, but most of all because i have further surgery ahead of me.
I had my first period in three months during the middle of December (my last one was 5th September)
Any advice please - i am fretting here…!

IIRC it is highly inadvisable to get pregnant while on Tam, so a good thing would be to go and see your GP. If it’s within 3 days (I think it’s 3) the “morning after” pill might be suitable, but it’s a hormonal thing too, so might not work with Tam. I don’t think anyone’s going to be able to tell you how likely a pregnancy is, we’re all different and cancer treatment seriously messes with your internal systems.

Sorry not to have any real advice other than to see your doc. Fingers crossed for you.

Thanks Choccie
I am waiting to be pounced on as i know that there may be some ladies who have had their fertility compromised by chemo, and may not be able to conceive even.
It was a moment of madness, but like you say, cancer treatment does things to your insides…

Will have to wait and see…

NAZ please don’t wait to be pounced on… you had your moment of madness, as you put it, and now you are trying to find the best next step for you. Choccie has offered some very practical advice, worth you considering if you want to avoid possible pregnancy (emergency contraception has its name for a reason, but you need to act soon if you choose that route). I expect no-one can answer your question about how likely it is you’ll be pregnant, so it’s really up to you to take control and act sooner rather than later… if you ‘wait and see’ it might be a worse/harder decision to make.

Hopefully all is well and you’ll know better for future reference! As for people who might want to pounce… I hope they will appreciate that it has ‘cost’ you to post here and that you really don’t want to cause any hurt or offence.

Take care

Thank you Rev Cat
No, i don’t want to hurt or cause offence to anyone.

The three days is up now, so not really sure what to do, other than wait and hope for the best.

Naz, I could be wrong about the number of days, it might be 5 and not 3, I can’t remember, so get on the phone to your GP first thing in the morning and ask. The helpline might also be a good source of information too - worth calling because the G in GP is “General” and we can’t expect them to be experts on everything.

But do be aware that you might not be suitable for the morning after pill in any case, particularly if you were hormone positive, as I’m pretty certain it’s a massive dose of one hormone or another (can’t remember which).

There are some pregnancy tests which are extremely sensitive and can give very early accurate results, but again because you’re taking Tamoxifen that might affect the results.

Almost forgot to say, I hope you didn’t mean the ‘B’ word - blame isn’t the point here.

(And there are some people who are smiling that you found some mojo in the first place, even if you weren’t as careful as you could have been! )

Thanks Choccie…
My mojo - well i thought it had died a long long time ago, i have to say, and it’s return surprised me somewhat!

I think it is 72 hours, but will check in the morning for sure.

Oh the joys of it all !

Hi Naz,

Firstly, I certainly hope that no one will pounce on you here. It’s easy to make a mistake in the heat of the moment, but as Rev Cat said a few of us will definitely be smiling at that mojo of yours  In any event, you are doing the right thing by asking for help in this situation.

I’m pretty sure the emergency contraceptive works within the first 72 hours and it’s available without prescription at your pharmacy. I think there are other options that may be available post 72 hours but they will be GP prescribed so definitely get that appointment sorted with your doctor ASAP. However, as already mentioned any emergency contraceptive will be a massive dose of hormones so if you are ER/PR+ that will have to be taken into account. Is it possible to give your BCN a call about this?

Hi Naz,

stop beating yourself up! Loads of babies are born mid september due to christmas frivolities, and how great that you are at a stage that BC isnt consuming every action and thought now. I think its unlikely you will fall pregnant but it is a possibility and there is a lady on these forums who is ypur age and who it happened to earlier this year. She said tamoxifen can actually make you more fertile sometimes, so you are right to get it sorted. From the deep recesses of my mind i have a feeling that non hormonal methods are available slightly longer than the morning after pill and may be more suitable. I think a coil can be inserted to stop any implantation of an embryo if indeed there was conception. And now your mojo is back maybe a coil isnt a bad idea, we csn have the non hormonal one apparently.

Oh, and i’m one of the ladies who wanted another baby before my dx amd i have struggled really hard coming to terms with not being able to. Your post hasnt upset me in the least, i’d not want to get pregnant on tamoxifen eiyher even if i could.

Phone yr dr and get an urgent urgent urgent appointment. Phone your bcn and /or helpline first so you are armed with the correct info in case your gp is clueless. Good luck

Thanks Ladies
I am so glad i haven’t upset anyone …
I have two lovely children, and feel my family is complete. I just never expected things in the bedroom department to re-start to be honest, as it has been two years (since dx basically).
My brain tells me that a pregnancy is unlikely - my periods are so irregular now anyway. But my body might tell me otherwise!

I will ring the BCN now and see what she says…

Thanks.

Just to up date you all.
I have been prescribed the morning after pill (GP is of the opinion that it won’t do me any harm) and i can book an appt, to have the copper coil fitted.

Thanks for all your advice and tips…much appreciated…
Myself and OH wil be more careful in future for sure!

Naz

xx

Hi NAZ, just been reading your posts and glad you have got things sorted out hopefully. Its bad enough going through this b****y disease and all it entails without another worry. Lets hope 2012 brings your new boob and everything back to normal.
I still have my hole but a bit smaller. Had an infection since I was last on here, but anibiotics sorted it out. Back to see PS on the 4th and see whats next on the agenda. Then off to Tenerife hopefully for 4 weeks on the 13th, boy! do I need some sun.
Best wishes,
Pam

Hi Pam
Good to hear from you again.
Yes, had a mishap the other day (own fault, but did shock the hell out of me as relations with my OH have been 0 since dx).
Have taken a massive dose of hormones, and hopefully that will solve the potential problem.
Glad to hear that the hole is smaller…
Tenerife sounds fab, i am jealous!

Enjoy yourself -HAPPY 2012 - LETS HOPE IT IS A BETTER YEAR!
