Taxane query - are they basically all the same??

Hi ladies
just a very quick qestion…
I’m awaiting scan results + know I will defo be back on chemo in the next week or so. I am wondering whether weekly taxol would be consdered as I know it’s a common choice amongst my triple neg buddies. Only thing is, I had a recurrence immediately following my last taxotere treatment, which indicates that my bc was resistant to tax. If it’s resistant to taxotere, does that automatically rule out the other taxanes like weekly tax (piclitaxell)?? Are they basically one and the same?
Thanks in advance

Tina i had taxol 3 weekly with carboplatain with gd results also I had reacurance on taotare so maybe this is a option for u

Also my onc told me placitaxol had some bits of tax in it but sometimes if tax don’t work taxol does I was like worried because tax made mine worse but I’ve been ok

Thanks laura that’s reassuring to hear. Weekly tax could be an option then (although tge thought of losing my hair again is totally depressing). You will have to give me more info on the prostrate drug please so I can interrogate my onc next wk
anyone else had success with weekly tax after resistance to another taxane???

The name of the tablet is called Abiraterone if u google it it tells u a bit about if u also google icr it brings up a bit about it I don’t know a lot about the trial yet as he don’t know if I can go on it all depends on my tissue results I’ll let u know when I Know look at this link hope it works. For more information visit icr.ac.uk

Thanks laura will have a googling session in the morn  Want to be well clued up when I see my onc next wk. Don’t want to just get capcetabine if there are other potentially better treatments out there. Wonder if tax can be combined with cisplatin? Iobviously wouldn’t get carbo again so the combo u had is ruled out…

Anyone else responded well to one taxane but not another?

Hi Tina,

I’m on capecitabine in conjunction with Abraxane, so don’t know if that is another option? I had Taxotere as part of my primary treatment 3 years ago, so this is my second taxane. I’m not triple negative though, so don’t know whether our options would be the same.

Best of luck anyway. Incidentally, I was like you and dreading losing my hair for a second time, so much so that I tried the cold cap for two sessions, but it didn’t really work and my remaining hair was such a mess I felt it better to just go with the flow, so went without the cap last time, and clippered my hair short last Thursday. It feels strangely liberating, although the hairs on the keyboard as I type this are a bit annoying!

I had 10 lots of weekly Taxol and my hair started to grow back - it’s nearly 2cm now.
The Taxol made me feel good at the beginning but the probs built up (I have fibromyalgia and it brought on a massive long-term fibro crash) so I haven’t been able to continue with it.

Hope this helps with the hair query.

Sorry Tina I can’t answer your question but I do think that even if one treatment didn’t work another similar can do In the same way that other drugs do. Eg my cholesterol was still high on simvastatin so put on atorvastatin and this has worked.

Iv been told I’m likely to get taxotere for my recurrence but know a few folk who haven’t had a good response with taxotere and just wondered how common that was.

Also I had Epi-CMF last time and not sure if you can just get tax on it’s own or it would be in combination with something else? Any ideas?

Hi Tina,

I’m on weekly Taxol for bone mets - just done number 3 this week of a total of 18. I also had Taxotere after initial diagnosis, in combination with FEC. I was told by my onc that although they are both taxanes they work in different ways, so presume if you didn’t have a good response to Taxotere that might not be the case with taxol?

I, like you, felt horrified at the thought of losing my hair again & had a couple of “melt-downs” prior to starting treatment when I thought of losing my hair again. However, since starting treatment I have calmed down & accepted that this must happen for the taxol to do it’s job & that’s the most important thing. My hair has started to come out this week, so I’m getting it chopped tomorrow, and will be glad to get rid of it now. I don’t feel anywhere near as sad about this as I was the first time, and I’ve got a fantastic wig that I’ve already started wearing & feel very confident in it. This has made a big difference to me, as being confident is half the battle!

Good luck with all your decisions & I hope you get some answers to your questions quickly.
