Taxotere mouth, YUK

Hi All

Had my first Tax on Friday, how long does the yuk taste in the mouth last? I can’t taste anything properly…

Cecelia. x

Cecelia - i had TAC 2 friday - last time the mouth lasted about 5 days. Also, last time, dandelion and burdock was drinkable, this time not!
Try VERY cold water, ice and a chunk of lemon. I find the colder it is the less it tastes.
Another way to get fluids, apart from lollies, is jelly - you can get that down without it touching the sides - or tongue!
But it does go away

Hi Cecelia

I have been living with it since my first tax (thrid and last late next week). It hasn’t gone away, just got worse or better. When it is bad I can’t eat. When it is less awful I can, but everything tastes vile. I have tried everything! It should be marketed as a dieting aid.

Hope yours goes better than mine.

Cheers

Just tried some blueberry juice, did the trick for 5 mins!

Gonna get some jelly.

way to go Cecelia ! Very much trial and error - but worth persevering.

Hi all

Oh yuk yuk yuk…it is horrid. I had a really sore mouth and the dodgy taste. I found cold pineapple juice and ice lollies the best, but after a few days it got worse and I had white spots on my tongue too. The chemo nurse said I had Oral thrush, so I got some stuff for that and also Difflam mouth rinse…both of these sorted me out, I would def recommend that mouth wash (wasn’t specifically for Oral Thrush, but just takes away that taste and the soreness too).

Good luck!!! I am due Tax#2 on Friday so will use the mouth wash before, during and after just in case!!!

Love and hugs

Hi everyone

Had my first TAX 2 days ago and mouth yuk , sore tongue and feels slightly swollen but think it could be more of a dry mouth. Just had some sloppy weetabix and that went down okay. But got pineapple lollies to help. Just want cold wet things.

Got sticky itchy eyes but nothing else up to now. Do the other side effects build up or would I they have started yet ?

Hi, everyone,
I had my 1st Tax on Monday and was ok til yesterday when the aches and pains started and the Yuk mouth too. I can just about cope with the mouth thing but the aches are awful, i can’t find a comfortable position and spent all day yesterday in bed, have managed to get up today and its not soooooooo bad today but, god, its hideous! I had 3 FEC before this and managed pretty well on it…Tax is something else!

On the bright side( if there is one!) i only have 2 more to go!

Take care everyone
Sue xx

Dear Brenda

The aches and pains started on Tuesday, 4 days after the Tax, possibly also due to the GCSF injection and I’m afraid I have suffered quite badly this week. Shooting pains in legs, head, ulcerated mouth, stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

I’m sure it’s individual so I do hope it doesn’t affect you too badly, my experience is not the norm from what I hear.

Just make sure you take it easy and give into it if it comes. On the good side, no sickness, just the runs and the aches and pains

All the best

Ladies

Good old Nurofen for the aches and Difflam for the mouth, I am gonna do both as ‘preventative’ this time around. Off for my 5th dose (well 2nd Tax) in about an hour.

Love and best wishes for non yakky mouths and non aching legs

Dear All

I do empathise. It is awful. I think of it as compulsory dieting, and have dropped a stone and a half since all this started. There has to be a bright side! I have my last tax next week and can’t wait to get back to normal.

Nurofen works for me on the aches and pains. Nothing works on the explosive diarrhoea!

Chins up!

Hi All,

I had my first Tax Friday 19th October and was ok on the saturday and sunday, but monday morning I woke up feeling like I had played in the rugby world cup final. I ache in every joint and muscle, have a sore mouth, ulcers, diarrhoea (which has now turned into constipation). It is now over a week later and I don’t really feel much better, the sore mouth has subsided a bit, but the aches and pains are terrible - I forgot to mention that I also had indegestion.

I have hardly eaten anything solid, as with the sore lips (did I mention those?!) I can barely open my mouth to get any in. I have to have another dose on the 9th November, then an MRI to see if the tumour has shrunk - I was originally on AC but there was not much change in the size of the tumour and that’s why I’m now on Tax.

I have picked up some good tips on the forums though and will take some Nurofen and try the Difflam - does that taste awful as well, not that I’d notice anyway.

Good luck and very best wishes to everyone,

Tracy sss

Hi Tracy

It’s horrible, I am OK today, had last Tax yesterday, bad mouth a little better as I have another mouthwash thing. I had sores in both corners of the mouth and as you say, couldn’t open it to shove any food in, but it all tasted terrible anyway! I recommend jelly and blueberry juice.

Aches expected in the next couple of days. Same with me with tumour size, but it really shrunk after 1st Tax

Good luck to you.

Hallo All

Last tax a week ago Thursday and I know what you mean. Just crawling out of the pit for the last time I hope. The mouth is awful. But good for weight loss, if nothing else. It will end, my loves. It will. Legs still killing me but I did get out today. And am so skinny with the not eating, it is wonderful. Two stone lighter since May!

Now I get the implant inflated on Monday, if blood ok. Such joy!

Hang in there. It really does get better. And it must be zapping those bad cells!

Love and strength

Well as it was my last chemo yesterday, I have just treated myself to a cooked Camembert (even though I’m not allowed cheese, never mind unpasteurised cheese!) and some roast tomatoes, spinach and cripsy bread. I can still taste a bit… My god it was amazing.

I am going to have a brandy for a nightcap too, sod it!

Good luck everyone

Hi Tracy

I felt like I had been hit by a bus about 2 days after my first tax and it lasted about 4 days, think it took me just over a week before started to feel normal, as for the sore mouth, didn’t stop me eating actually, but the first few mouthfuls were painful, then got over that to eat, but was very sore and not pleasant. Now in my third week and all OK, but got 2nd tax on Wednesday so no doubt all start again.

Hang in there. I told my onc’s registrar and he said was gonna get something else prescribed for mouth fungus!!! Can’t remember what, but shall speak to chemo nurse on Wednesday too.

Hope you feel better soon, and like I said, think it was after 10 days I was back to normal but still had slightly sore mouth but that cleared too.

Take care
Love

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies, I woke up this morning with a swollen lip - what next?. I did manage to push some food into the slot that used to be my mouth and took an ibuprofen which helped a lot. I have discovered that watermelon is wonderful when you feel like this, especially if it has been in the fridge - so cooling and refreshing. Also, my friend brought over some Manuka honey which I am tempted to smear on my sore lips, as she mentioned that they use it on wounds in some hospitals - I really am prepared to try anything, I hate not being able to open my mouth wide, though to some people it is probably a great relief.

I was hoping to go back to work tomorrow as we are having a quiz night in aid of Breast Cancer Care, my boss did say he would come and pick me up if I felt better, so I shall see.

Thanks again for your messages, it is lovely to know you are all out there with your care and support.

Lots of love to you all,

Tracy xxx
