Hi All
I am on taxotere at the moment and it’s looking very likely that I am about to lose my first nail. My finger has swollen up and it is all bruised looking underneath and to the side - the doctor gave me antibiotics but they don’t seem to be doing anything and it looks like it’s going to fall off. What I was wondering is, will there be another nail underneath or will I have no nail until after my treatment finishes completely. I have had 5 taxotere at the moment out of 9 provided there is still signs off shrinkage after my next CT on the 19th June.
Except for this and the numbness in my finger and toes I’m coping with not too bad.
Hi there,
Sorry to hear you are suffering at the hands of taxotere. I lost my little toe nails on taxol, but while it was tender in the short term, they soon toughened up and new nails grew again. They still fall off now, two years later and I doubt they will ever be quite as they used to but it does not cause me problems. I still have vague numbness in my toes too, but again, not much of a problem really. Not everyone has these side effects. One tip I was recommended was: wear dark nail polish - it is rumoured to stop ultraviolet light getting to the nails and may help preserve them.
Hope the scan shows good results.

Thanks Jenny
Did your nail start growing back in whilst you were on taxotere or not? I do wear dark nail varnish all the time, when yousee the state of my nails (all yellow and dead looking) you would have to anyway!
Hi Diane
When my finger nails came off on taxotere (two on each hand) there was lovely new pink nail underneath them…even while I was still on the drug (but only had 4 cycles during primary treatment.)
9 cycles is quite something…very best wishes with it
