Taxotere & The Lockerbie Bomber

Interesting to see in the paper yesterday, that Mr al-Megrahi, who was freed from prison & went home to Libya 7 months ago, on humanitarian grounds as he would was expected to only live a short time, has now got his condition stabilised as he has been prescribed Taxotere.
Apparently, after his treatments, he can be unwell for 2 or 3 days, but then enjoys a period when he’s quite well.
However the article does say that some patients experience side-effects including nausea, upset stomach, hair loss and tiredness.

After my own extreme experience with Taxotere I’m a bit sceptical about how well he is supposed to be feeling. I think it should also be stressed that he has been prescribed this drug since returning to Libya and was not treated with it in Scotland as it is such a very sensitive subject.

I saw this very small item in the newspaper on Monday, while I was in hospital for the whole day. I thought when I next logged into this site I would find loads of debate about it - however there was nothing & so I started this thread. Since then only 1 comment has remained on it, although I have seen another 2, which have obviously been removed; 1 of these bemoaning this was here this morning but has disappeared.
Personally I have no opinion on Mr al-Megrahi’s being treated, it was just the fact of it being Taxotere that caught my eye. I do think that the government could not really win in this case, there was obviously a lot of debate & criticism about the decision to release him, but equally I’m sure if he had been given the treatment here there would still have been complaints, not least about the cost.
I am concerned however if posts on this subject are not being allowed. There was so much debate on here about Sally Webster’s cancer in Coronation Street, 20 pages of comments as far as I recall on the original thread. Can it possibly be that the powers that be consider we are responsible to have a debate about a fictional character, but not about a real person ?

Talking about man who was charged and convicted of 270 counts of murder is going to be a bit of a contentious issue, even if you do try and link it up with taxotere. I’m sure there are lots of Scottish people like myself and plenty of others who would like to say exactly what we think about mr al-megrahi, however, it would probably be against the “spirit of community guidelines.”…and wouldn’t really have much to do with breast cancer.

I don’t see that Mr al-Megrahi’s identity is actually the issue, it’s more the morality or otherwise of treating anyone serving a life sentence with potentially life prolonging drugs, costing a lot of money. To what end would we be prolonging the life?Would it be so that the person could serve a longer sentence ? If so, could our reason for giving treatment be revenge? On the other hand do we, as a society, have the right to only provide these drugs to law abiding citizens ? I think there is a huge issue here.

I find this thread rather odd… He hasn’t got breast cancer…he isn’t in this country anymore…we aren’t paying for his new treatment…He did a terrible crime…but I cannot see what good any debate could do on this forum…Perhaps if anyone has any opinion about this they should write a letter to the Newspaper instead???

I would suggest perhaps The Times,Telegraph or The Scotsman as the places to debate this. The latter had a very long discussion thread on this story the other day. One thing I did learn from the reports is that Taxotere is also used for advanced prostate cancer patients, also other cancers. I didn’t really have any idea it was used for anything other than BC. Agreed, there could be a lot of issues arising from this story, but I don’t thing this is the right place to discuss it as there are many other sites where it would perhaps be more appropriate.

Here Here!.. can I say that?

I bow to the majority.
