Teeth extraction!

Hello ladies ,
Terrified, got to have my wisdom tooth out tomorrow as it has become loose and painful. I am on letrozole and have had 3 zometa transfusions.
Have any of you ladies on zometa had teeth extracted? . Terrified of jaw necrosis :two_hearts:
Thank you

Hi @horselover

I’m sorry to hear this and I am sure someone will be able to share their own experience of zometa and teeth extraction.

In the meantime, there was a conversation about dental treatment and zometa earlier this year on the forum that you may find useful: Teeth whitening/scale and polish dental treatment on Zometa - Living with secondary breast cancer / Supporting each other and sharing experiences - Breast Cancer Now forum

Our breast care nurses are here for a chat too, here on the forum on the Ask our Nurses your questions board or over the phone 0808 800 6000.

I hope tomorrow goes well, we’ll be thinking of you.

Sending our warmest,
Lucy

Hi @horselover
You might get my response twice as I couldn’t find your original post first :slightly_smiling_face:
I’m on 6 monthly zometa (just had my 7th). Late last year I had a tooth problem, the hospital dentist wanted me to try a root canal. My dentist said it couldn’t be done as the tooth was cracked(having never had one I was a bit relieved). Back to the hospital for an extraction. I was very anxious, all the stuff about necrosis of the jaw, dry-socket (hadn’t heard of that one) etc. It all went absolutely fine, healed well. It was a back tooth, so not a problem for my appearance.
They do have to alert us to potential issues but they really are very, very rare.
I hope all goes well for you.

Hi Horselover
I hope the operation went well as another lady assured you her wisdom tooth extraction did. Its reassuring for me as i’m about to have my back root removed next week. I have been told they need to give me an antibiotic infusion the hour before, but this is simple because of my various allergies. The op is day surgery and i’ll not be knocked out. But Lilke you we are looking to a positive outcome. I too am a fellow horse lover and have been to see local foals at play today and just be around the magical healing powers, i suggest on recovery you do the same. Love and light Moonsox xxx

Hi
I have been on Alendronic Acid, another bisphosphonate for 7 years and during that time have had two teeth removed without problems. They healed quickly and reacted just like a normal extraction,

I had my diagnosis in 2021 and needed a wisdom tooth extraction after my first Zoledronic acid infusion. My oncologist was so stressed out about it. I had it done privately and the surgeon told me that if I want to wait it will be even worse as I was going to have more Zoledronic acid doses and apparently stays in your body for 10 years after you finished having it…as a precaution he put stitches in my gums so to prevent infection… it’s possible but just have discussion with your team.

Wishing you all the best.

I get how you’re feeling about teeth extraction. It can be a bit nerve-wracking, but many folks say it wasn’t as bad as they thought. Just remember to take it easy afterward. Stock up on soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, or mashed potatoes—your mouth will thank you!

Also, chat with your dentist about any concerns you have. They can guide you on what to expect, making things easier. I’ve heard great things about Westlake Village Dental Services; they’re known for being super friendly and gentle. Take it one step at a time, and soon enough, you’ll be back to your routine, feeling much better!
