Hi S! Oh that’s interesting as it wasn’t the protocol to remove the primary tumour when I was diagnosed stage 4 in 2003. Might mention this to my Onc although part of me is thinking I’m doing well at the moment, nearly 6 years on so would it be wise to now press for op…? I do think if I was newly diagnosed stage 4 I would. Take Care…xx
Thanks for posting the link.
I was dx’ed with bc and bone mets all in one hit just before last Xmas. My onc considered a mastectomy for me but then decided that my bone mets were too extensive. However, I had a really good response to chemo, huge shrinkage, and now I’m having five weeks of radiotherapy to the breast and nodes - she says to try and get rid of the whole primary tumour. This is the hope anyway but I have great faith in her so we’ll see …
Hi – I’ve done a quick whiz around cyberspace to see if there’s more info – most of the papers have picked this up today, and here’s a link to a video of a press conference about the research: ecancermedicalscience.com/tv/?play=240&cid=0&scid=0&q=
Will try to find a link to the research paper itself.

Hi again – the abstract for this research, presented at the Joint ECCO 15 - 34TH ESMO Multidisciplinary Congress in Berlin today, is listed on ex2.excerptamedica.com/CIW-09ecco/index.cfm?fuseaction=CIS2002&hoofdnav=Search&content=zk.results_abs – it’s Abstract O-5005 towards the bottom of the page, but the site is busy and won’t open the page at the moment – will try later.

p.s. lots of other papers about treatments for BC mets have been presented at this Congress
Hi LesleyLP,
Do you mind me asking what chemotherapy you were on?
I was on Taxotere and Cyclophosphamide, initally it worked great, tumour shrank to practically nothing, but unfortunately it grew again when i Completed the 6th session. I’m so annoyed and now just want to have surgery, but i think my consultant wants to try more chemo, I’m so afraid in case it doesn’t work either!!
I’ve also asked my onc about this study, and please bear in mind it is a small study. He says there are views either wasy at the moment, and he is not currently convinced. At the moment I am on Herceptin and it seems to be maintaining me at NED, which is great, so I hope at least I will have more time for there to be more convincing studies.
Hi Nordy
My chemo was EC - Epirubicin and Cyclophosphamide - I’ve since had five weeks of rads which have hopefully shrunk the primary even more - my oncologist hopes it has gone completely, but I won’t know that for a while, have to let things settle for a few weeks before they can take an ultrasound of it.
Hope your next chemo works for you - there’s lots of different options out there to try
