Thorax and abdomen with contrast scan

Hi everyone, I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer just after new year. No treatment started yet I have a scan booked for next week and now I’m worried as they want to scan my abdomen as well, probably to see if it’s spread - is this a routine procedure that a lot of people go through before they start treatment? Any help appreciated to stop me worrying between now and next week.

Hi dc11

Don’t worry about this scan - yes it’s quite routine and a lot of women various scans before starting treatment. I had a CT scan of chest, abdomen and pelvis and also a bone scan.

Hope this put your mind at rest a little and good luck too

Thank you Ruby, that’s already made me feel better if it’s often routine and I suppose they’re being thorough.

thanks again

I too had a CT scan of organs once i was DX with grade 3 with 1 lymph node involved. They said it was just for reasurance. Dont worry about the scan it is fine, i have another booked for monday and am not worried about the scan in the slightest. It’s the waiting for the results that is the worst bit and no one can make that any easier for you i’m afraid. Good luck with your scan take care

I too had full CT and bone scan. I had grade three and one lymph node involved. I was more worried about the scans than anything else but they came back clear. It’s natural to be anxious but the scans are routine.

Hi DC11

I had an array of scans & tests after my diagnosis in July 09 -

Mammogram
CT Scan
Bone Scan
Heart Scan

I know all hospitals do things in different ways, but I was told it’s just so they have an overall picture for the breast surgeon. The bone scan & CT scan I had were full body.

Good Luck xx

A relative was diagnosed with cancer in the left breast in 1998. A surgery was done to remove the lump and subsequent therapy involved chemotherapy and radiation. The surgery was followed up by hysterectomy. Five years ago she was operated upon to remove her gall bladder due to the formation of gallstones. Now, even after 12 years, at the age of 60, she is required to have a mammogram done every year and also a chest X-ray and an ultrasound scan of the abdomen. There are also lab tests for blood including alkaline phosphatase. We would like to know if these tests are mandatory even at this stage for her well-being.
