I’m awaiting the results from biopsy for breast cancer. After performing mammogram they suspect my lump to be cancer. I am very worry about the surgery and how painful could feel afterwards… Any insights you can give me? Thanks

Hello @vio sorry you find yourself here with us. I had a lumpectomy on the 11th December and although I was very positive and greatful to be having the operation I was extremely nervous. The surgery, complications, anything you can think of I worried about. However it really was very manageable. I only used the big pain killers once, the rest I just kept up with paracetamol. After the first day the exercises they ask you to do are easy enough to do.
My advice would be to be full prepped before hand.
Have some front button pjs so you dont have to lift your arm over your head. A front opening bra or crop top really helps keep things supported also.
It took about 3.5 weeks for me to walk around without feeling pain but the pain I am talking about was very mild. Almost like an irritating blister at times. And from the beginning I was rarely in pain when sitting still.
Slow and steady does it ![]()
Thank you for your kind words. Is duch a rough time
at the moment. Hoping to pass over this stage.
Thank you for your advice. I will prepare adequate clothing as didn’t come into my mind how important is to undress easily after operation. Hoping that you feel better now. Hugs
I am doing well thank you. Some good advice I’ve heard in the forum is give your breast care team a call, they reallt don’t mind, and ask them what they think you will need as that might give you a more personal answer.
A tip for the surgery day… a light weight dressing gown for you to use whilst you are waiting is nice to have. I also took a flask of ginger tea to help me after the anesthetic. This was cold by the time I drunk it but it was very welcome. I wish I had also taken a bottle of water because I felt so dehydrated and the day surgery unit was very busy when I was there. I wasnt able to ask anyone for another drink.
After the surgery when you are awake and they want you to prepare to leave, you’ll still have some of their strong pain relief in you. Thats the best time to put on your front opening bra top. I kept mine on for a couple of days haha
I don’t know any contact number of cancer team…Do I have one???
Hi vio,
Thank you for posting.
It’s understandable that you feel worried about what to expect if you need to have surgery once you have the results of your breast biopsy.
Having some pain after surgery is common, but most people find this can be managed will with pain relief medication, as @foxgem has mentioned.
Waiting for biopsy results can be a difficult time, especially when you have been told there is a suspicion of breast cancer. If your biopsy does confirm breast cancer, your treatment team will be able to let you know about any treatments recommended, such as surgery and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns you have to help you prepare for treatment. You may find it helpful to write down your worries so you can make sure to discuss them. You may also want to take someone with you to the appointment for support.
