Throat problems

Throat problems

Throat problems I think i posted about this afew months ago but cant remember!!!
During my rads my onc wantedt o give me afew extra sessions on my sternum - he said to to get the nodes in that area just as a precaution. He did warm me that after a couple of weeks i might experience the feeling/sensation of food going down but would wouldnt last more than afew weeks. Two months after rads finished i could feel a lump in my throat, cant pysically feel it from the outside but just when i swallow. Has anyone else had this ? it seemed to go away and is now back, it doesnt hurt just feels like something stuck half way down my throat. No other symptons apart from a bit of heatrburn now and again.
Cant go to docs as they will shove a camera down my throat and couldnt have this done.

Hi Pineapple Hi Pineapple,

Could be a side effect of radiotherapy.

Could be acid reflux due to worry.

Go to docs and have it checked out - for your own peace of mind.

Best wishes,

Sue

pineapple sounds as if it could be an oseophageal diverticulum. A barium swallow would show it.
Not dreadful but tiresome- it’s a "pocket "in oesophagus. -what you eat gets into it. There is a small op for advanced/food not going down but otherwise ithey leave OD alone.
OD acts as a barometer on your wellbeing because when muscle tone is good you forget it and when under the weather you feel it, because it’s caused by slack oesophageal muscle. So IF this is your prob it should disappear when you’ve recovered from rads.
Ask your GP as I’ve found there aren’t any hot lines, in my area, between ENT and oncology.
If you have an anaesthetic your throat is very sore when you come to and it gives constant horrid taste with chemo.
Best wishes and get it checked, dilly

Thanks for your replies girls, i finished rads at the end of April and first noticed it at the end of June, then after about a month i forgot about it for afew months and now its back. I really cant face a camera being put down so …

Pineapple you drink a barium swallow!
Camera is for endoscopy- I worried that it might have been up the wrong end of someone else- but they said no, different kit for each end!
Best wishes, dilly

Hi Pineapple Hi Pineapple

No one can put a camera down anywhere without your express permission - not even the paparazzi.

Fear of a thing is always worse than the thing itself. The thing that really spooked me was thought of the medics pulling my wound drains out. I sat on my hospital bed shivering in anticipation and jumping every time I heard any footsteps in my direction. (I don’t think I’ve ever said that to anyone before!)

And how do you that they are going to even want to do anything with a camera?

Just go and see your GP/breast nurse/oncologist.

That’s an order.

With very best wishes,

Sue

Hi there… I share your experience. I finished chemo in June and rads in August. My throat had got very sore during chemo, and my neck (nodes) got 25 zaps during rads. My consultant warned me my throat might be adversely affected for a few weeks, and certainly ever since chemo I have felt my throat wasn’t quite right. It’s fine when I eat, but when its relaxed and I sip something I can feel almost a rippling effect all the way down (a bit ‘lumpy-and-bumpy’ would be another way of putting it). Some days it would be worse than others, so quite unpredictable. I tried not to worry about it, and hoped it would settle with time as promised, but by November I could still feel it. I asked the GP about it, and she did feel my neck and could detect some ‘thickening’ in the tissue which she agreed was probably from the rads, but she did not think it was my lymph nodes (which was my main concern). Later in the month I was also seeing my original surgeon (for my 12 month checkup) so I asked him too. Somewhat suprisingly he sent me for extra diagnostic tests (an ultrasound and a barium-swallow) both of which detected nothing. I am still waiting for the follow-up consultant appointment, but the results did the job of putting my mind at rest and, surprise surprise, I’ve hardly noticed it since.

There was no mention of using a camera. I suspect that would only happen if the something was detected that needed further investigation.
