hello everyone i had breast cancer 6 years ago and survived thank god, my question is can breast cancer come back in the thyroid, i have been diagnosed with hyperthyroid and i no u can get cancer there as well but can it spread from the breast as seconderies hope some1 has got a little insight on this hoping 2 hear from someone soon thanks helen
Hi Helen
I hope you don’t mind me responding to your question and am sure there will be others soon that will also do likewise.
My understanding is that the most common sites for seconday breast cancer are the lungs, liver and bones. If you look hard enough, you will probably find someone who has had secondary breast cancer or a local recurrence in or around the thyroid, but I would think it very rare. Also, I believe that the hormones produced by the thyroid probably wouldn’t be affected by cancer cells, so an overactive thyroid is more likely to be from another cause. I have heard of thyroid cancer mestastising to the breast - again very rare. Hyperthyroidism is a fairly common disorder - three of the people I work with are affected and there are not many of us in our department. It is far more likely to be this and this can be treated effectively. This is so much the problem once having had cancer that everything that happens worries us in case it has returned.
Good luck with your tests
Cathy
Hi Helen,
Also developed hyperthyroid post breast cancer. I had an obvious (but small) goitre and had a CT and Ultrasound guided biopsy “Given your history…” It is scary to develop such a lump but fingers crossed that yours too will be straightforward. After the tests I had the Radioactive Iodine treatment (1 capsule to swallow) and now have regular blood tests at the GP’s to ensure I don’t go under-active.
All the best.
Helen,
There is a thread somewhere about thyroid problems. I think it is quite a common problem in the general population so it’s not surprising that those of us who have had BC get it too. I had an overactive thryoid dx a year before BC. I asked if the two were related but was told no, just a coincidence
hello, And thank you for the replys feel a bit better about it now. I a question 2 those of you tht have had an overactive thyroid did your symptoms macth the test results mine dont i have had the tests done twice and they have came back as hyperthyroid but endo says it doesnt match the results, suppose i have 2 wait and see him was diagnosed feb 22 with this and as yet not recieved an appointment thanks 2 all of you for reading and replying 2 this and i hope use are all well good health 2 you all helen
Hi i was interested to see your thread as i have just been told i am hyper. My doc said normally if its caused by chemo or rads its underactive.
I have to have a scan tomorrow. I cant feel any lumps but my tests results were
TSH 0.01 (the week before it was 0.03)
T3 4.80
T3 1.22
As i say i have to have this scan in the morning, not looking forward to it and will see my Doc with the results Mon morn. But they will give me the rpinted scan results to take home so i might know tomorrow.
Whats happening with your problem.
What do your blood tests say?
What symptoms do you have?
I just feel abit trembly inside. I have lost loads of weight but have been dieting and excersing like mad so i want to take the credit for that. lol
Pineapple
A bit trembly inside is exactly the right way to describe my overactive thryoid syptoms. And I remember being able to eat whatever I wanted.

Its only the trembly thing that i have noticed (apart from palpatations and cant decide if thats the trembly thing or not) i have actually put on over 3 stone in the last almost 2 years but i have lost over a stone in the last 2 months but i have been living on salads and excercising full time! to get into my bikini by the end of May. So i want to take the credit for the weight loss. However i dont really know do i if its me or the thyroid.
I am off for my scan in 20 mins and not looking forward to it.
I will post on here when i get back.
Got back, got the results straight away.
She said there is a small nodule that doesnt look suspicious but the whole of the thyroid is inflamed. She said that in her opinion its an auto immune thing and i have the scan results and her letter to give to my doc on monday morning.
The scan wasnt uncomfortable at all she was very gentle.
Sorry, i meant to post on my thread and not hijack this.
