Since joining this forum i’ve noticed that we all seem to get our results at varying times after our ops. What are others experiences of this ? I’m aware of further tests needed for FISH but the standard ones surely should be available at the first surgeon / onc meet after the operation … or am I being picky. It just would save a hell of a lot of stress for us and our families if node and oestrogen / HER2 results were there . Please BC nurses I would welcome your opinions - your often the first in the firing line when we get ratty because the results arnt there ( and thank god your there for us to turn to)what do you think as professionals is the system too varied across the country?
totally agree with you that results should be available as quickly as possible, waiting for results is def the worst.
It is only since being on here that I have realised that I was one of the lucky ones in that I had all my results 10 days post op. Here in North Wales they do the herceptin testing on your initial core sample though I do know in other places you can wait months for this result. If it can happen here and we get this standard of service it should be happening in other places too.

Totally agree. Mind I have to say my area has been brilliant. From mastectomy to lymph nodes I have only had to wait a week at the most and that is stressful enough as people will know.

I was very fortunate to have my main results 8 days after surgery, at the same time that the ends of my stitches were snipped. But it wasn’t until after I’d finished rads that I got the HER2 result, partly because it was sitting at the wrong hospital! Fortunately an unusually competent registrar rounded it up and phoned me, but he shouldn’t have had to do that.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, Sandra - if they can do it where you are it should be happening everywhere. Yes, some areas serve a larger population but those areas invariably also have more resources. There does seem to be a major time/resources-management problem in some places.

Thanks so much girls - just thought it was me!! lets hope others chip in with their experiences. It’s a nightmare situation and i think it’s due to an admin / pathology issue. However I think this could easily be put right. Mind you I personally have had some wonderful cock and bull stories for excuses only to be refuted by dated letters stating results were available after all, and this is why I’m asking BC nurses to contribute because I truly believe they are often put in very awkward situations in relaying info back to us… but then maye I’m being unrealistic in asking ‘serving BC nurses’ as they have to work in the system. How about some retirees chipping in?
I have been waiting for 5 weeks for my CT and bone scan results. I have spoken in person to my surgeon and breast care nurse; I have telephoned, e-mailed and snail mailed my request to surgeons, nurses and secretaries, and I STILL haven’t got them! All the phoning, writing and ringing around is leaving my mental state in a very delicate state, to say the least. All they have to do is print the damn thing off!!
Noone has discussed them with me, and I am going crazy every time the post comes and goes and no results.
I have this every time I want them, even though there is a note in my file to say that I request copies. I do not trust them to give me info, as once before they said everything was fine, and it wasn’t! I hate this system so much, I am screaming!!!
Sorry girls, had to let rip.
Thanks for that
