To go or not to go

Hi, I’ve been lurking around these boards for a couple of days but wanted to post for people’s opinions…
I went to my gp 2 weeks a go because I have had a painful right breast for nearly 4 months now, she examined both and merely said ‘I feel a little something, will refer you but it’s nothing to worry about’ - of course I’ve been worried ever since and stupidly googled it all before coming across these forums.
Anyway, my appointment at the breast clinic is tomorrow morning and I’m freaking out, the pain I originally went to the drs for has eased a little and I’ve examined myself and can’t feel anything unusual …am I wasting their time by still going to the appointment?
I can’t get out of my head that if I go I’m just wasting their time, that and I absolutely despise hospitals and my apt is a few doors down from the unit I was in 4 times over the last two years for ectopic pregnancies and a miscarriage so the dread for the place is really hitting me
this is causing a lot of tension at home because my partner is insisting I go just to be sure whereas I’m edging on the side of cancelling…so confused xx

hi Rachy,
Sorry to hear of your past experiences & it obviously has difficult associations for you, but you are not wasting anyone’s time.
Your partner is right. The appointment will soon be over & the most likely outcome is you’ll get the all clear & feel very relieved.
It will only play on your mind of you dont go & cause more anxiety.
Wishing you the best for tomorrow & get the deed done!
They will look after you
If you want to, let us know what happens.

Hi Rachyj I can really understand how much you do not want to re-visit places so associated with sadness and pain in the past. But your partner and ann-m are right - you do need to go. You need to have your mind put at rest that it isn’t cancer (and apparently most investigations  find that it isn’t - there are so many benign breast conditions). If you do find you have cancer be assured that it is very treatable these days, but you need to know one way or the other or you will worry yourself witless.

You are certainly NOT wasting their time - that’s what they are for. If you didn’t go and then the pain came back in a fortnight’s time you’d be back to worrying and awaiting another appointment.

If anxiety is really getting to you, there is a free confidential helpline on this site - it might help to talk your feelings through with someone who isn’t a friend or partner.

Let us know how you get on. X

Never question that you are wasting their time.  If you were concerned enough to go to the GP, and the GP was concerned enough to refer you, you should go.  You owe this to yourself.

If they tell you there is nothing there or it is something benign (and bear in mind that, most of us hear this - and we did not feel that we were wasting their time), then brilliant.  But if you cancel this appointment, you will spend the next weeks and months, wondering if you should have gone and if you have left something lurking within your breast.

It might not be the place you want to go to, and it might be difficult, but you have to look out for yourself , for as much you and those people that love you xx

You need to go or you will never put this anxiety properly to rest, big girls pants on ,gritted teeth ,you can do it.Jill.

just to add, Rachyj, not being able to get out of your head that you’re ‘wasting their time,’ is only the anxiety talking.
As Jill says, you can do it!
