Travel insurance rant

Sorry for the rant but i am so fed up at the moment with all the insurance companies and how we are penalised because of BC. I was diagnosed last July and had WLE last August and also auxillary clearance and it was found in 1 out of 19 lymph nodes removed. I finished chemo just over 3 weeks ago and am starting radiotherapy on Monday and will also go on Tamoxifen. After all of what has happened i thought it would be nice to go away with OH at end of April. I was looking at Cuba but after getting some quotes for travel insurance may not be going anywhere. Most of the sites i tried wont even cover me for BC and can you believe one of them is called Cancer Travel Ins. How ridiculous what do they cover for then? Im fuming at the moment. I have tried all the sites that people have mentioned on the threads on here and alot of the ones where people have said they are cheaper will insure but wont include the BC so that is no good. Then they are ones that will insure but they are hundreds of pounds and also then have excess fees of if you claim starting at £260. I wouldnt mind but i go on holiday every year, have always had travel insurance and never claimed for anything. The amount of people who must never claim and these companies still like to penalise people and I probably woulndt even need them! Im sure it is higher as soon as i mention it was in 1 lymph node! Anyway rant over but if anyone has come up with any other sites not previously mentioned please let me know so i can try them.

It seems that Eurotunnel are pretty good - several people on here have recommended them as they don’t penalise you as long as your doctor will confirm you are fit to travel - I havent called them myself yet but will need to as I need insurance for my trio to Florida in May.

I am also interested in any suggestions as I understand most companies want you to be two years from dx and I am at the same stage as Annette.

Hi I have just got my insurance through Insure with. It was £135.00. It does have an extra £200 excess on anything todo with bc or my husbands blood pressure. We are going to New York in April.I had mx last April and chemo also husband is on blood pressure tablets.
xx

I’ll be another Eurotunnel vote - myself and my OH (with heart attack history and me with bone mets, on chemo and morphine and seeing onc every 2 months - an insurers delight!) having been quoted 12K for 2 weeks in Mexico, got annual worldwide including US for £112 for the both of us - just with the proviso of getting a ‘fit to travel’ note on your notes about 1 or 2 weeks prior to travelling.

I feel your pain annette100 I was almost driven round the bend trying to find insurance for travel to the US. I am now another vote for Eurotunnel, we just returned from Florida thanks to finding the details of the Eurotunnel policy on another thread. The cover seems to be good and the price is a breath of fresh air when the only other company who would insure me wanted £4250. Travel insurance for people with cancer is a huge rip off. I suspect very few people claim for anything cancer related but I have heard plenty of stories about them using cancer to wriggle out of claims.

Insure Pink or Columbusdirect.

Hi on a train right now but when I get home I will look to see who my policy was with. I went to Florida cost me about £100 maybe a bit less last August and covered me for everything that wasn’t cancer related. I feel your anger it’s highly unlikely you would be going on holiday to have a MX or a round of chemo or radiotherapy! Ridiculous we are just going to get the usual injuries and minor health issues like the rest of the general public. I am as angry as you are!

I was so cross with Saga. I had annual travel with them but they would not cover me for a trip after I had my WLE, even though no lymph involvement. They cancelled the policy and refunded the premium pro rataed. I had also got a policy for my trip to Florida. After some discussion they agreed to retain me on cancellation but would not cover my trip.
thought that going for a company that specialises in older people would be the right thiNg to do, but I will steer clear now!

Have a look at the helpful and interesting forum, travel insurance thread. Miriam 77 has recently posted about compnies which gave her quotes for the states…also eurotunnel as above but miriam was excluded because of recent diagnosis…I dont know how they knew…they twice refused to let me tell them anything of my diagnosis saying it wasn’t necessary! Pamx

Thanks Herbgarden, will have a look

Hi as promised I went with MEDICI worldwide travel insurance for single trip and it was £66.83 hope that helps

Thanks Carrie, will check them out

Hello ladies thanks for all your comments. Medici travel quoted £687, Insure pink £232 and Columbus direct would not even insure me. I have found a few now though that do give more realistic prices. World first quoted £152 just for me but need to get another quote adding OH. Insure with is £146 for both of us and Towergate Ins which is supported by cancer research is £166 for both. I just need to review all that they cover to each other before i decide which one to go with. Kay all those quotes are worldwide so will cover the states.
I would say to anyone getting really cheap quotes especially if it is an online quote be careful as alot of them will give a quote but in tiny writing on the screen it will exclude cover for BC. Also i was told by one of the companies that i should get my OH insured on the same policy even though i have insurance through my bank that no longer covers me as if anything happened to me and i say needed to stay longer and go in hospital my OH would not be covered and its very unlikely that the bank insurance would cover this.
Good luck for everyone looking for insurance to get a reasonable quote.

Hi, I had cover with towergate for a number of years after my primary diagnosis…never had to claim so can’t comment on that! When I had a secondary diagnosis confirmed I had a holiday booked to portugal. I informed them and they coverd me at no additional cost for that holiday. Unfortunately they then wouldnt renew the insurance because of my secondaries! Pamx

Not sure why its so expensive and mine wasn’t. I had only been post surgery 4 months when I asked for my quote. Maybe it’s because you had chemo or node clearance which I didn’t have? It’s so not fair I think this site should branch out and get into insurance to help us all out.

This thread is running concurrently - breastcancercare.org.uk/comment/2080775#comment-2080775 - someone in there has just gone to Eurotunnel and got a good deal. To be honest I’m not sure why anyone would look anywhere else - they’re giving you cover at the same rate as ‘normal’ people with the only proviso being your onc / GP is happy for you to travel - but each to his own!

Hi,
Another Euro Tunnel convert here, having had years of paying stupid money for travel insurace to cover my BC and a couple of other medical conditions!
Having just posted on the thread mentioned above by Nina, I echo everything she says.
Annette - it’s not an online quote from Euro Tunnel - and the small print doesn’t exclude cover for BC or any other medical condition either.

Thanks for that ladies. Will give euro tunnel a ring.

I finished active treatment last March. Lymph node involvement, chemo, radiotherapy etc and now just on Letrazole. The co-op bank premier account gives RAC cover, mobile phone insurance and travel insurance. I had to pay an extra £108 but that gave me and husband year long worldwide travel including US and that covers the BC. A good bet if you are going away more than once a year and will use the other two benefits. Previously used insurewith.com who seemed fairly reasonable.

C’est moi - I am Nina’s convert to Eurotunnel insurance and we will be getting a note from our Specialists to say that we are fit to travel for our own peace of mind even though I am now 2 years on from diagnosis and hubby’s heart attack was 6 years ago!
Before contacting Eurotunnel we were quoted anything from £176 to £600 to not being covered at all!
What really irks me is that whilst we may have pre-existing medical conditions we are screened and probably a far better risk than all those supposedly ‘healthy bods’ who have absolutely no ideas what they have undetected lurking inside of their bodies!
Happy holiday everybody!
