TRAVEL INSURANCE Help required. After completing my treatment I have finally booked a holiday. However, having trouble with insurance. I have phoned the companies listed on the breast cancer care factsheet but wondered if anyone could give me any details on any insurance company that they have used. At this rate the insurance will cost more than the holiday!!!

I have an annual travel policy that comes with my bank account. It’s underwritten by Norwich Union. I contacted them about my cancer. They continue to insure me with an exclusion for the cancer. This takes into account that I have finished chemo and rads so it may be different if you are still actively recieving treatment. I think the situation with most companies would be that anything to do with your cancer will be excluded.

Freedom and Marrs Hi

The only company that I found would cover me for cancer for a reasonable price immediatley post tretament is Freedom Travel (besed in Cambridge). Ask for Fiona if she’s still there. Other people with cancer find Marrs very good. Haven’t got phone contacts to hand but you can find them on the net.

Bear in mind that cover to US will always be more expensive than other places. In EU you may just want to risk it but check reciprocal agreements.

Bear in mind too that most ordinary travel insurance will cover you for everything apart from anything cance rrelated. Some people just take the view that if you’re only a couple of hours flight away from home in the unlikely event of anything cancer related coming up they would just get on a plane home. But bear in mind that especially in the States insurance companies may try to wriggle out of a claim which could be cancer related. (My paranoid fantasies which prompted me to spend £300 on insurance for a 10 day trip to San Francisco just after tretament was a) falling and breaking a leg and discovering horrors it was bone mets; and b) collapsing with a brain tumour. Neither happened but insurance gave me peace of mind. Now over 3 years past diagnosis I’m more philosphical but I still wouldn’t go a long distance without cancer cover.

do you know if your on tamoxifen and one of the side affects could be DVT’s would you be covered if you just had ordinary insurance or would it be classed as cancer related i gather it would be now as i write it?

I know a friend who i met on the ward with me went on hols just a few months after chemo and less than a year Dx, then went 18month after Dx insurance was £100 cheaper.

I booked my holiday insurance this week for me and my partner Jack.
I booked it with AXA and I am not covered for anything cancer related.
It was £74 for both of us.

All Clear Hi F1Fan,

I finished my treatment in July 2006 and no more follow up treatment. To celebrate my “1st anniversay”, I am going to Lourdes for five days. After requesting quotes from various Insurance company, I found All Clear Insurance most reasonable. They specialise on people like us and they qouted me £18.04. Very good I think!Give them a try and Good Luck.

lymphoedema and travel insurance Hubby and I have booked a three week trip to America for September and it will then be more than 12 months since I completed my treatment, since which I have also had a clear mammogram. I would be inclined to just opt for excluding the cancer as I did when we went on a European trip last September, but I have developed mild lymphoedema in the affected arm and was wondering whether to get more comprehensive cover? I know I will have to wear my compression sleeve during the flight and I thought of asking my GP for some antibiotics to take with me as a precaution, but would be grateful to know what others think as to whether I should pay more to include this condition or not. So far I’ve had no problems other than slight swelling.

I booked annual multi-trip insurance for myself and my partner with Bradford and Bingley. It cost £150 for both of us. It’s for cover worldwide (including the US) and also covers me for anything breast cancer related. The main condition was I had to be 3 months after the end of treatment (ie chemo / rads - tamoxifen is OK).
