Travel insurance

Has anyone out there taken out travel insurance recently? I’ll be going to Sardinia in May and phoned Freedom Travel Insurance for a quote - £158 for one week!!! That’s extortionate.

I have secondary breast cancer in my bones and have an annual worldwide travel insurance policy with Aberdeen Insurance for £75 for both my husband and I with an excess of £750 if the cancellation is due to cancer. This will possibly be less for Europe and if you do not have secondary breast cancer. They are really helpful and sympathetic and realise that just because we have cancer we still want to go on holiday!

I don;t have the number to hand but if you google them I am sure you will get their number. Or I will pop back later with the number.

Enjoy your hols

I’m with Aberdeen too, had a one week winter sports policy for all the family (5 of us, inc three teenagers) for £55, and two weeks in France this summer for £36. I am one year post dx, and am on herceptin & tamoxifen. There is no extra excess for BC. Their number is 01472 826672.

Hi Girls

i have just been to India for 3 weeks and found a very cheap, comprehensive insurance from Insure Pink. I think it was only around £60.00. You can find them on the Web. Good luck!

Hiya all!

My hubby and I are going to the Maldives in June (can’t wait!!!) and I rang Aberdeen and got us a years insurance for £65.00. I am on herceptin until November and excess for BC is £500. My onc said no problem - just go for it!! So I am!!!

Enjoy your holiday!

Thank you so much for your replies, and thanks Roadrunner for the phone number. I’ll give them a ring and hopefully sort something out. I did go on holiday last year and just took out insurance with Debenhams without letting them know I’d had breast cancer - but, I was a bit worried just in case anything happened.

I wondered about travel insurance too.
We got 12 months free travel insurance with Direct Line when we took out home insurance and having read through the terms it appears that any problems which arise due to non declaration of an illness cannot be claimed for. I don’t anticipate any problems arising in the week I am away due to my condition (I am on Zoladex and Tamoxifen but otherwise not really unwell) so am not declaring my illness but did wonder if I broke an arm or something if the insurance not pay out

Anne,

You need to be careful with not declaring things. Even if a claim is totally unrelated to BC it is possible for the insurance company to wriggle out of paying up, due to non-disclosure of the full medical facts. The way round it is either to declare & pay any extra premium, or to declare it but agree that the BC is not covered. That way you don’t pay any extra, but are covered for anything other than BC.

I will have another read through it to see exactly what is what but I’m not sure how I would class myself for insurance purposes. I’ve had a tumour removed and am on the treatments I mentioned above so does that mean I have cancer, had cancer but no longer have it or what. I wouldn’t know what to put down.

Anne,

I would ring them up - then you can tell them exactly where you are with treatment and it is up to them how they classify you.

I think Aberdeen are probably the best because they offer annual premiums, although miaonline do a reasonable Europe one as well but not an annual or worldwide premium.

Insure Pink won’t touch us secondary ladies!

I have now got mine from Aberdeen for £13 for single trip Europe, excess £250 if any BC related problems. Peace of mind now

Hi
Especially to janetter I am going to the Maldives too!! in July - am really excited - have you been advised about jabs and any other precautions. I have used insurepink (£43 single trip) - but have now discovered my original company will give me a year policy (with my husband and son) the 3 of us for £153 they said this is because I am now 1 year post treatment - had grade 3 tumour 1 lymph node involved finished chemo and rads march 2007 and am now on tamoxifen,
Elaine

Hi All

I have been insured with Egg for at least the last 3 years and last year had booked a holiday and a week later found out I had BC. Egg paid out for the whole holiday with no hassle.

The insurance is due to be renewed on 23rd March and I have just phoned them to say that I shall have to cancel because circumstances have changed in that I have had breast cancer. He said the price remains the same though the breast cancer won’t be covered, which seems to be a the same as a lot of companies, and some do cover it with an excess. The policy is an annual worldwide insurance for my and my husband and is £67.00 !!! I couldnt believe it as i thought it would go up or that they wouldn’t cover me. I know it doesn’t cover the BC but as I would only be away at the most for 2 weeks at a time I don’t think the BC would give me any problem.

Worthy ringing for a quote

Love to you all

Hi Elaine!

Oooh how exciting you going to the Maldives too!!! I sooo can’t wait!! I haven’t been advised about jabs or stuff. I did have a few a couple of years ago to go to the Dom Rep but I’m sure the chemo will have wiped everything away!!! I’m not bothering having any more as I haven’t been told otherwise.
Bet you can’t wait either! Where are you going? We’re going to Fihalhohi - looks amazing, then again I don’t think anywhere doesn’t in the Maldives!! Hope you enjoy it!!!
Love Janette x

I recently booked a holiday and because I am almost 1 year from diagnosis I decided to phone the insurance company. They have kept the price the same but I have had to waive any possible claims connected with the BC and also diabetes.
If I fall down and break a leg I wonder if they can say they wont pay out because my bones are more fragile with taking Arimadex???

I feel more comfortable now having an excess for BC rather than having to waive any possible BC related claims because as you say Margaret you never know if they will try to link everything they can to the BC

Good morning
i am going to spain next week and i have been looking for insurance quotes, i am due to start herceptin next week , i was told by most of the insurance companies they would not cover me for any illness related to Bc, so i am just going for standard cover for luggage etc, as i am sure if i needed treatment for an insect bite they would find some way of blaming my lymph node removal or something else bc related , so i am just going to enjoy the break and i hope you have a lovely time x

Hi Galen

Most of the main high street insurance companies won’t insure b.c. although I’ve always had the outlook when I had primary breast cancer (once my initial treatment had finished) - what am I going to become ill with? I used to declare it as a pre-existing medical condition and that was sufficient so wasn’t covered by it.

However, with secondaries, it’s a completely different ball game as it’s in my spine and I just can’t take the chance of being without insurance if I fall etc. There are very few insurance companies who will cover advanced cancer or when you’re on chemo although two really good ones are Aberdeen Insurance and miaonline and thank goodness for them!

As I said earlier I got mine through Aberdeen by phoning the number given by Roadrunner earlier in this thread, they haven’t actually sent me it yet but I’m expecting it next week. I had searched for Aberdeen insurance on the internet but couldn’t find it at all so, are they insurance brokers as opposed to an insurance company?
