treatment finished what signs to b aware of if it comes back

hi had pain in my knee for about 10 days and now its painfull in my leg should i worry or is it just nothing not had it b4 n what symptoms shud we watch out for . any info wud b gratefull thanks xx

Hi rozita

Although bc does spread to the bones, it is rarely in the lower leg so to find it in the knee in the first instance would be very unusual. There are many more explanations that are more likely - have you tried all the usual things - anti-inflammatories, resting it in a raised position, ice packs etc? If it is getting worse I would see your GP.

At the BCC Young Womans Forum they said any pain which is new & persistent should be checked out by your GP if it doesn’t go after 2 weeks and doesn’t respond to any home treatments. Hope you feel better soon. X

Now my active treatment is over I am really surprised at the level of paranoia that I have and the constant fear that every pain, lump or any other symptom is breast cancer – we are told that this reduces over time but it is really hard to come to terms with. x

Hi I totally understand the paranoia I finished chemo in June and Rads August (grade 2 12mm lump, no nodes involved but vascular invasion noted around edges of tumour), had my first mammo in nov came back clear, convinced myself I had a lump under arm so sent for a ultrasound for my peace of mind also came back clear, I seem to to go through periods where I am fine and very positive and rarely think about it to really dark times where I constanly poke at myself, just now am poking at my collerbone area and also convinced its in my liver. I want the old me back and not this paranoid person so fed up with it all. I was diagnosed at 32 and have 2 young kids and am terrified of not seeing them grow up why cant I move on…

Hi notbreastfriend

I am posting to the BCC webpage ‘Moving forward’ which contains some information you may find helpful, you can access it via this link:

Hi, this is for Rozita - I have bone mets, and one of the areas it spread to for me was my left hip. It took nearly six months for the mets to be diagnosed, because the pain in my leg came and went for about three months, and was never in the same place. Sometimes it was in the hip, other times in the knee, other times in the shin or the ankle or even the foot. Eventually the pain came one day and never went again and it also settled around the hip area. At a routine appt with (supposed to be the onc but was one of his …) registrar, the pain was at that time around the knee area and she confidently said ‘oh you can’t get bone mets there’. She then asked me if I wanted an xray, but as she’d all but told me that there was no chance it was cancer, I declined (didn’t want to be a nuisance … silly me).

Anyway, hopefully your pain in the knee area is something completely unrelated to breast cancer, but as Tina said, if it persists DO go to the GP and DO insist on a referal for scans, xrays etc if that seems the most appropriate course of action. In the end I was limping really badly, hardly able to move the leg at all and in a lot of pain. It turned out I wasn’t far from fracturing the hip (which did actually fracture a year later despite all treatments, but that’s another story!) - so don’t leave it as long as I did before demanding action! That is if it persists.

Hope it’s nothing serious.

Take care,

Alison x

I really empathise with you. Once upon a time, I was almost blase about my health (which is probably why I was stage 4 at diagnosis), but now I’m a total hypochondriac. If I have a sore throat I think it might be throat cancer, and if I have a headache, I imagine it’s my skull mets spreading, or that its a sign of secondaries in the brain. Over the last year I have had Chemo, conventional rads, and specialist rads (Cyberknife), and now I’m just on endocrine therapy and bisphophoneates, I can’t seem to rest for thinking that I should be doing something more. Almost had a stand up fight with my Onc on Monday, because he wanted to do the next routine scan in six months time, and I wanted it in three months!.

Just wanted to say hi to rozita! Our ops and treatment about the same time last year. Can’t believe how quickly last year went (thank God!)

Hope your knee is nothing to worry about, but I know what you mean, every ache and pain becomes possible mets.

Keep us informed. X
