I am in the middle of rads and am being treated in three places including my collar bone. I wonder if any one else having treatment to this area had experienced a lump /soreness in their throat when they swallow. Also getting a dry throat.

Hi Alison
Have you spoken to the radiologist about this - I would ask the question are they shielding that area. I know I had rads a long time ago but they used to place lead objects on the plate above me and they were lined up to protect the larynx and a couple of other areas.
dawnhc
Hi Dawn
Thanks. I have rads again on Monday and will ask.
Alison
Hi Alison
I had rads to the collarbone area and i had a very sore throat for a couple of weeks, and i found it
difficult to swallow.
I was warned that this could happen, as the area being treated is so close to the throat, like Dawn said
i had a kind of lead weight put on the rads machine to try and protect my throat but it still caught it.
When you have your rads are you told to keep your neck tilted right back and to look the other way?, only
when i had a different radiologist she told me to do this also to try and help.
It didnt last more than a couple of weeks, eat lots of yummy ice cream till it passes.

Oh forgot to mention…
I was given solme paracetamel syrup to take before food, it numbed my throat a little to help with
swallowing. You could ask about getting some.
Julie
Hi Julie
Thanks your post has really helped. I will ask about the lead weights on Monday. When I have reds to the collarbone I do have to turn my head the other way.
I have been taking paracetamel tablets but will ask about the syrup.

Hi Alison
I have just finished my rads (yesterday!) - and I too had rads to collarbone and was also told I may get a sore throat - feel like a lump in it. I too am sure there is a shield to help prevent damage - I too had to tilt my head to the left and extended it as far as I good when they did rads to that area.
I was very lucky and only had a slight sore throat - that disapppeared in a couple of days.
Please take care, love
Anne x
I suffered a slight sore throat during rads bit nothing bad enuff to actually comment on. What was more annoying to me was the hickey cough that developed - I was warned that this might happen as the rads hit the top of the lung. I’m finished rads now (29th April was my last) and the cough has just about gone now.
Anne - congrats on getting to the end. It’s great to be free of the daily communte to the hospital isn’t it?
Good luck to those who are still going through rads.
Thanks Everyone. It got really bad this evening so I went to see the Doc. who did blood tests etc. As my glands were up he has put me on antibiotics as a precaution. I have rads on Monday so going to pin someone down for a chat.
Well done Anne on getting to the end.

Hi Greenbean
Hope you get to talk to someone tomorrow. had the same problem but with plenty of iced fluids and paracetamol it settled down (last rads to my neck was last week) and i only notice it now if don’t drink enough.
Crispy
Thanks Crispy. I had a chat with them this morning and they think my throat is linked with rads to collarbone. I have bought some soluble paracetamol and plenty of ice lollies!
I have three more sessions to the collarbone before the ned of May so hope it will clear then. Thankfully the boosts will not be near.
Hopefully I will lose some weight because of pain when I swallow!
