My hair will have gone by the time of my mate’s wedding in two weeks time, and TBH, I’m a bit concerned about what to wear on the old bonce for her do. I’ve been to Trendco, and bought some cotton bandannas which are OK, but not particularly glamorous or trendy. Anyone know where I can get something more up to date??
I live in London, so should be no problem finding a shop, it’s just I don’t know where to start. I’m thinking of going to Selfridges next week, after my nausea has passed from the FEC!!!
Hello, I managed to find some lovely raw silk headscarves which were large compared to bandanas. They looked lovely and had loads of comments. Came from an ethnic shop in the Brighton lanes (South lanes). I was initially concerned that they would slip but had not issues what so ever and prefered them in the end to my cotton ones.
I’d go with silk, too. You want something quite heavy-weight (stays on better), and the bigger the better - my favourite scarf is about 90cms square, way bigger than a bandanna. This gives loads of fabric to roll over at the front, avoiding the “small head” look, and loads to play around with at the back, hiding the “missing hairline” look! Try ebay? I’ve got some great ones there.
Oh ta for that Nic. One question, sounds so silly - but how did you tie it so it stayed on your head, if you know what I mean. I am worried it will come off on the dance floor and I’ll look all ‘Britney Spears’ !!!
As they were large squares (about 80-100cm) of material I folded them across the diagonal. I then put the long side on my forehead with the opposite corner on my spine. Then tied the two ends that were on either side of my head in the hollow of by skull just below where my hair line was using a reef knot (important to do a reef otherwise it may come loose - left over right and under and right over left and under). I did get someone to put their finger on the first half of the knot to keep it tight and then found I could slip them on and off without the need for a re-tie everytime - just needed to be slightly tightened. Produces a very neat flat knot. Had to tie fairly tight but not once did I had a misshap nor headache. I then either left the tails to hang down my back. Alternatively if it was windy I would twist them together and tuck them over the top of the knot and into the area between head and knot. I did also pull it relatively low aswell to get a good covering so the top of my ears were covered - otherwise I found it too obvious.
The other thing to take into account is that I bought only 100% silk ones as opposed to polyester. I found that silk was lovely and soft and felt lovely and was not as slippery as polyester ones.
The ones I found were relatively cheap - from memory they were about £15 or £18 for two and they had loads of colours to choose from.
Hi Nic - I’ll google reef knot !! I used to live in Brighton, so know it well - still have a couple of really good mates live down there, but they are all in the 'burbs now like Shoreham etc. It would be great to see them, but don’t think I will have time before the wedding, but will hopefully see them afterwards and go for a nice walk in the Lanes and look for the shop.
I have been following your thread and think that the ladies who run the Headstrong service should be able to help you here. If you call the helpline on 0808 800 6000 the staff here will direct you to the Headstrong team in your area. I trust this is of help to you and hope that you enjoy your day at the wedding.
One of my friends bought me a gorgeous, delicate, handpainted silk scarf from a store in covent garden so if you have time to look there you may be able to find something. It was quite long & I just laid it over my head then tied in a know at the base of my head. Never had any slippage issues with silk scarves. I used tit tape a couple of times with polyester scarves which did slip.
Thanks Sam and Sarah for that, I have just found some old tit tape, so I will use that if needed to (I’m a bit worried what’s going to happen after a few glasses of Champers, if you know what I mean!!). I will deffo ring Headstrong on Mon!!!
I wore lots of silk scarves during my chemo 2 years ago. I found that it was a good idea to wear a soft cap under the scarf which prevented slipping. You can buy this from modestworld.com/hats.html - Try the all purpose cotton cap at 5 dollars!
I find scarves look better worn with a cotton skull cap underneath. this not only prevents slipping but gives your head more shape - it doesn’t look so flat. Headlinehats.co.uk have these very cheaply and will get them to you in a couple of days.
I have found some lovely soft indian cotton scarve also at theindiashop.co.uk. they have very pretty colours and patterns and send each one with a small piece of silk in a matching colour which you can then tie round on top of the scarf . this again looks pretty and gives more shape. they will also get them to you in a couple of days. I have worn these a lot and the nurses at chemo always comment how nice they look.
When I’m going out I wear a black wool beanie (hot I know, but I don’t wear it for a long time) with a beautiful, long scarf draped over the top, and tied underneath - very like the trendy scarf styles you see Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton wearing, but over the hat. Gives a kind of 70s Biba look and I’ve had lots of compliments. You could probably do it as well with a cotton skull cap if you can find one. I find the black just gives a definition - I let it show about an inch under the scarf at the front, so the scarf is kind of over my head. Team with nice eye make up and earrings and voila.
I forgot to say have a look too at Headcovers.com which is a site specialising in things for chemo patients. they have a big selection of hats, turbans etc. It’s a US site but their stuff arrives in just 5 - 6 days usually .
You could also get a bone to go under the headscarf: these are the underneath bits for hijabs. They are sold on ebay (tho’ if you do a search most of what comes up is skull and crossbone design stuff!), or at your local asian dress shop. That might be the right sort of place to buy silk for making squares too…
Thanks again to all of you for these great ideas. I live near Tooting, bweeps, so will deffo be able to find an asian dress shop if I want one of these bone things - ta for the tip. I’m just off to John Lewis now to have a look around the wig and headscarf dept (if I can get there without feeling too bleeurrrgh !!!).
Hiya,
I found some gorgeous headscarves in accessorize - 100% silk for £15. They have some lovely colours and prints too (I ended up buying 2!).
Rashpal x
Accessorize do do some great headscarves, they also have great hats. I bought a couple of hats that completely cover my head, some caps etc don’t go down your head deep enough but hats from accessorize are great.
Good luck with your shopping and enjoy the wedding
