TUG Free flap reconstruction - has anyone had this?

Hello everyone,

This new girl is still researching the best reconstruction to have after Mx for DCIS.I’ve got to give a decision to the surgeon Tues April 6.

As I’ve not enough spare body fat for a TRAM, I’ve seen on line the TUG Free Flap reconn recommended for smaller breasted reconn’s. I’m looking at natural recon for my 32B right breast, and am a bit nervous about implants going wrong - contracture, not sagging with age etc. Anyone have any experience of this - especially the healing times, as I’ve heard its major surgery and 8 weeks recovery… Thanks!

Hi CloverHoney

I’m slim with small boobs and have been offered the LD flap operation.

I’ve not heard of the TUG flap before. I’ve found a link on the macmillian site, but it’s pretty brief and doesn’t give away much detail. I would interrogate your surgeon or breast care nurse for more info!

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Thanks PangaPanga!

The link you sent is what prompted my post.

I was offered the LD too, but am looking at alternatives. The potential loss of muscle strength of the LD the surgeon mentioned worried me, as I am quite physically active.

TUG free flap seemed to be an alternative and more discreet scarring - I scar badly with a tendency to keloid, and long-term. I am looking for a reconstruction with minimal scarring, and one that will still allow me to do the sports and activities I love without muscle weakness.

Only thing is, UCH my treating hospital doesn’t perform this, so am having to research this independently.

Thanks again,

CloverHoney
