Two yearly mammograms

Hi,

I was diagnosed mid-2009 and had a follow-up mammogram on the unaffected side in mid 2010. I am now stunned to learn I’ll now only have mammograms on a 2 yearly basis. I was originally told I’d have yearly mammograms for 5 years post-diagnosis. Anyone else had a similar experience within the NHS in the UK?

Hi Skinnyminx
I had an appointment with onc today and was signed off from oncology department and back into the “hands” of the surgeon. I was informed that as my tumour was estrogen positive that I would have yearly mammos, but hey that may change.

In Leicester we are given them every 18 months for six years

I was diagnosed in September 2009, Had mammogram September 2010 and September 2011 and have been given an appointment for September 2012.

I am HER+ (MX, FEC-T, Radiotherapy and Herceptin).

I am still having appointments with oncology and breast surgeon.

Looks live each area is different

I’ve had one every year since I was diagnosed in 2006. However, last year it was decided the year 4 ladies didn’t need a follow up with a surgeon for the results unless it was felt absolutely necessary. I have my last one around November this year and will see a surgeon for a follow up and (hopefully) discharge. As I turned 50 this year I’ve been told I will pass into the screening programme after this.

I am yet to have my 1st post treatment mammo, and i thought it would be yearly…my sister who has been told she is a ‘high risk’ for bc due to me and our grandmother having died of ovarian cancer has been told by her local hos RUH Bath that she will get yearly mammos…

Hi

When I saw surgeon in December last year she told me it was each year for 5 years then every 2 years for the next 5.

When I then had rads in March & saw Oncologist she said a report which had been published (sorry can’t find it now) you only need to have annual mammos for 5 years & as such that is what I am now expecting.

My first is scheduled for 6/10/11.

After the 5 years back onto National screening if over 50. I thought I read somewhere if you were under 50 when you had your 5 annual ones you should continue to be checked annually until you do.

I’m thinking if when I go onto national screening I may consider paying for a mammo if my GP surgery not due to mobile unit for say more than 2 years after I finish just for peace of mind.

I lived in Suffolk when I was dx had mx (no chemo/rads)and was told I would have mammo every year for 5 years then back into national system, have now moved to Leicester where I will now have mammo every 18months untill six years since dx, so it does seem to vary in the U.K.

Thanks everyone for your comments - they have made interesting reading. I’m relieved to say that, after having made several nagging phone calls to the hospital over the past 3 months, I have just received a mammogram appointment. I hope this means I’m now invited for yearly mammograms, especially as that’s what was mentioned in the first place, plus it now transpires there’s a genetic element to cancers in my family.

Hiya - a bit late to this thread. I was very disappointed to know that my hospital is one of very few in Scotland who only give mammograms to MX ladies every 2 yrs, lumpectomy every year. I have to say i felt very cheated. I suggested to my GP i’d pay for one, she followed up with the hospital and eventually they arranged an appointment - she wasn’t keen that i went private, saying that they wouln’t have access to the previous screening therefore couldn’t make any useful comparitive data.

As others have said different goal posts throughout!
